I tried playing melee when i joined this server (3-4) months ago and it was basically what you described. The devs did something a month or so ago that greatly improved it but now it seems like it's back to being what it was prior to whatever the fix was.

I'm in the US and get about ~200 ping or so, back when the cap was 20 it was pretty bad, but now I would say it is pretty tolerable. Also with the server getting ddosed and whatnot a lot of times it is probably just the server exploding, or possibly internet problems on your end.

I'm hailing from Australia, so it's impossible to hit anyone that's walking nonchalantly away from you with a 5 yard ability unless the SW is kind enough to knock them down for you.

I think it will get a little bit better if they can improve the reliability and effects of knock downs a bit more. One of the big problems I have seen, high ping or low is that often knock downs just don't work. They go off but the target can still turn to stop positional attacks, or they just keep running with their abilities disabled.
Some knock downs seem to work very well and very consistently but others just don't seem to work much at all.
This is true of a lot of other abilities as well. If the cc was working right, you could work around ping issues a bit more, but with it being kind of funky, it's hard.

It's a pain in the ass still. One little freeze and you can never catch your opponent again.

Being snared by melees 10-20ft away, I experience the opposite.
Dying is no option.

Not on the servers I played and I don't mean times with high server load.
