Confused about Faction Melee vs. Ranged
So as I've been playing and reading I see a lot of hate on melee because of the inherent weakness in group combat. But simultaneously I see tons of feedback that Destro is melee heavy and Order is ranged heavy. I'm confused on how these two perceptions can coexist but we still have competitive group combat? Wouldn't Destro typically have the disadvantage if both these things were true?

You are understanding wrong.
Melee isn't weak in group combat, but it needs a proper group to function at an acceptable level. Without a dedicated guard and healers MDPS is just food, or finding themselves watching a fight they know if they try to engage in they will die in seconds.
RDPS is much MUCH more forgiving, because you dont have to be in range of enemy dps to deal damage. You need less healing overall, you can kite you dont need a 24/7 guard. You can actually do stuff solo in larger engagements.
Play MDPS if you want, but be ready to make friends its not for solo players.

MDPS is good, it's just too dependant on gear/teamplay, and is just a meat shield if you don't have either

You can have fun running melee even without a real group you just need to realize that you are going to die a lot and you need to play selfish. Get in, do your business and get the **** out.

A lesson that needs learned by pretty much all players, regardless of class. It's a game. It's okay to die. Get back up, pay your 20 silver, get back to the pewpew stabby stab and have fun!

Early game range are stronger because they are ranged. End game melee are stronger (except in cases of keep sieges where you are staring at the walls) because you have the gear and status and all your abilities. Most melee dps crit for 2x (have tactics for it) and none of the range except BW/Sorc can do that from afar.
Once at 40, you will notice Order hardly ever wins scenarios except premade, this is because melee train is much more powerful than range (melee aoe train especially). A sword and board tank charges at you with hold the line =15% dodge/disrupt for everyone behind him and once the melee train is here, you range will die literally in seconds. (or within a stun)
