Key binding tipps for new player

Hello fellow players,

I've started playing on this great server here without ever having played live, so this whole game is new to me. I'm starting to get a bit more familiar with classes, skills, add-ons and stuff, but one thing I'm really having trouble with is melee combat movement. Since there is no /stick or /face like in Daoc for example (which I've been playing for quite some time), I need to stay in range/LOS of my opponent by constantly moving manually. With all the constant jumping, running and turning I'm finding that pretty hard already, but it seems almost impossible to hit the skill keys on top of that. I just dont seem to have enough fingers on my left hand to hold W key, strafe with Q and E AND press the skill buttons.

tl;dr ;) :
Any veteran players here who'd like to share their key bindings with me? How do you guys do it? Do you move by mouse (hold both buttons and turn with mouse)? I already use NerfedButtons-Addon; took me quite a while to figure out how this works, but it helps.

Thx in advance.

First of all: Welcome!

I've played numerous MMOs and I can say my keybinds are pretty damn effective. The first thing you should do is rebind A and D to strafe left and right, respectively, instead of turning. There is no point in keyboard turning. You use you mouse for that.

Besides that, I use my mouse buttons for movement half the time. If you press down both mouse keys, you move forward. I also recommend having "auto run" on an easy to reach key. I have mine on my gaming mouse.

Besides all this I use these keys for gaming:
1-5 for combat abilities, 6-"12" (non-combat spells), F1-F4 (combat) F12 (Non-combat spells), Q, E, F, X, as well as the all the 12 keys I have on my gaming mouse.

Besides all the keys mentioned above, I use all of them in combination with either Alt, Ctrl, or Shift for even more keybindings.

Put them all together and you end with something like 50-100 keybindings total. It takes some getting used to, but it's worth it in the end.

Good luck!

I've got strafe L & R bound to C & V and I use my thumb for these keys (as well as jump) leaving my fingers free for skills.
Deadlakes (Marauder)
Shoreditch (Zealot)
Vhannos (Chosen)

Thank you guys for your quick and very welcome help. I've seen lots of communities where I would have got answers to a question like mine in the form of "Go back to your lame daoc crap you n00b!!11" or something similar. So thx for being nice to a new player :)

Thank you for sharing your experience and your detailed description. I'll surely try rebinding my keys to something similar, although I fear I'm just too clumsy to actually handle 50-100 bindings  And I will try to get used to moving with both mouse buttons in combination with an easy to reach run-toggle key. I almost had given up on playing melee classes because I just couldnt handle it, but I'll give it another shot now.
So next time you get killed by an order melee class it could be me ... maybe ... in the future ;)

Are you playing a WH? Just bind torment to lmb and fainted positioning to rmb. ;)
Spoiler:
In all seriousness though I recommend a gaming mouse if you can spare the cash. I got one when I started on this server and I love it. Not totally needed though. On live I just played with a laptop trackpad and moused over to abilities on my hotbar. Alternatively, if you're right handed, you can use your left hand for wasd q&e alt ctr and jump, and your right hand to press hotkeys.
<As If> & <Last Night in Sweden>
Mains: Chariot SM (7X), Tolfhic WH (Badlands: 94)
Alts: Dokdisrespect DoK, Mspe WP, Bleeped Chosen
He's a WH fleeing from fights with this rotation; Flee, AP pot then stealth
