Old veteran making his return

Hi all,

I started playing WAR back in 2008 and stopped playing probably a year before EA pulled the plug. I originally started out on one of the PvP servers. The Destruction player base was a bit bigger than the Order player base and made for a lot of fun! The server was eventually merged into one of the PvE servers.

My name back then was also Zakgrin and I usually played an IronBreaker that was about at lvl 75 rr when I quit. I was in a pretty big guild (can't remember the name) but it was led by a guy named Ulvengard and had a few other notable players like Baali (who tagged teamed Ironbreaker with me). We were one of the more coordinated guilds on our server and when we showed up we could usually turn the tide of the battle.

Story Time!!!

Probably the most memorable experience I ever had was defending a keep in one of the t4 destruction zones. The destruction faction had been making a strong push the previous couple of days to regain some of their territory. The previous weekend we had gotten very close to attacking their capital city. It was now Friday night, probably the busiest time on the server. There was only 1 order keep left in the nearest greenskin t4 zone to order territory. It was paramount that we defended it so that the zone did not get flipped. Unfortunately most of the order army was in chaos territory stalemating a very large destruction army.

Getting to our only keep was quite difficult. There was a destruction warband holding a choke point on the route to the keep. Only about 10-15 of us were able to get through or sneak around to the keep. The remaining order players were either killed or retreated back to the safe zone. The 10-15 of us that had made it were soon met by a 40-50 strong destruction army. We were far outnumbered and were beginning to lose hope. We ultimately only had two choices: 1. Stall and hope that reinforcements arrive, 2: Take matters into our own hands and go on the offensive. The keep door slowly began ticking down until it reached half health. We were running out of time and there were no reinforcements in sight. We were a well-respected and feared guild and if the keep was to fall, we would go out swinging.

We stationed a small group of players at the top wall. Their goal was to man the bucket of poison and to provide us with as much time as possible. The rest of us exited the back of the castle. We began sneaking around the side and were able to get behind them and slightly to the left. Most of their healers were on the back line and were in prime position for a devastating blow. By this time in the battle we had all built up to our strongest morale ability (I think that is what it was called… whatever it is that builds up while you are in combat).

We were noticed by the destruction army and they began funneling towards us. Baali and I led the charge from our side and the players on the keep walls began to fire off all of the AOEs they had. Baali and I had slotted our most powerful morale ability for large but compact fights. It was a cone AOE and did roughly 4k-5k damage (It was called Rock slam or something like that). If you got hit by one rock slam you could probably live to tell the tale, but two were utterly devastating. They would melt through even the strongest of tanks. The large amount of destruction players headed straight for us was icing on the cake. Baali and I carefully timed our rock slams so that minimal healing could be done. We wiped out half of their army in the snap of a finger.

At this point we were still outnumbered but we had strength (better gear), experience, and far more coordination on our side. It turned into a feeding frenzy. We were the hungry wolves, they were the fleeing prey. It didn’t take long before their army fell. The remaining destruction solders that had survived our initial assault were eventually hunted down or fled the battlefield altogether. VICTORY!!! This turned out to be a pretty crucial battle, because it kept the zone unlocked. We ended getting to the destruction capital later that weekend and cashed in on some wonderful loot.

All in all I cherish the days back when WAR was popular. Excited to potentially get back into it!
