Tell me who you play against, cuz I NEVER(!!) see anyone cleansing.
Besides that though, OP clearly never played a sorc/BW.

I would say to get rid of backlash all together. Engineers, maguses, shadow warriros and squig herders can out DPS casters and have a lot more survivability & better armor. Casters in this game are pretty useless without someone to heal them because of backlash. I've never played an MMO where casters hurt themselves while casting. My two cents ....

It was a disaster... Backlashes is still bugged, procs too, and still remain the threat of a heal debuff when you're full DM/Comb ...
No they're not. And do you know why they're not?

Because the Backlash handler will ONLY trigger when you gain career resource points.

Procs don't give you resource points, DoT ticks don't give you resource points. Only the act of casting does that.
wait, so why do I get hit by multiple backlash hits when I channel PoS?

A single known bug doesn't defeat my post. The implementation detail is that because Pit of Shades is a channel, the buff which it creates is responsible for incrementing your career resource. This should only have happened when the main aura buff was applied to the invisible ground object, but it was applying whenever the buff was applied to other players as well. Thanks for reminding me to close that report, though.

As a slayer, I support the nerfing of BW/Sorc survivability. This way all I have to do is run past them and they'll die.

I think the best way to balance things for everyone would be to just toss classes all together. Give every character 100 hp and a white quality weapon that hits for 5-10 hp. Auto attack only. Everything will be equal and we can finally see who has the most elite skillz.
