Yes melee SH is viable and yes you have spot in groups. In small parties like 6man, you want to play with pet for higher ST damage, in WBs you go without pet.

Good spec for WB play, for SCs and smallscale swap the All by meself tactic to I got lots:
RoR.builders - Squig Herder

Id go with choppa tbh.
Only 1 msh is usually taken for indegestion in wbs.
They have spammable channel with choppa in group,
And nice flat 25% dmg, but they just don’t have the pressure choppa does. They have nice “fluff”
Choppa is a unique dps as well because every group wants chop fasta, some classes are completely reliant on it to perform at their best.
If this is your first char, however, I would go for a dok or chosen. Easy classes, best at what they do, Easy sc pops, easy to find groups,
Dps is over saturated and good groups really only want you at high rr n gear
80 BG, SM
80 Choppa/slyer
75+ bw/sorc
80 wh, we, WL
60 sham/am

I would pick a Choppa since Melee Squig is not that good anymore.

The issue with the melee squig is it was 'revised' in a previous patch. Unfortunately, none of the Dev. team play melee squig, so they were unaware of the impact of their changes.

To be effective, one has to go all in with the melee vibe. This means all renown etc. need to focus on strength, melee crit. etc., nothing range focused. So, the melee squig doesn't use the other two mastery trees. This narrowness was fine, because the melee squig could do AOE or switch to a single target focused. That was changed. The melee squig was made into an AOE orientation. The melee squig lost their ability knockdown, charge was nerfed, and their one burst attack was removed. The melee squig didn't have access to any debuff of their damage type already, so the melee squig was reduced to running about in WBs as an AOE. This means not using the pet, which is kind of weird. The 'revision' eliminated a reason to use the class mechanic: the pet. This means the choppa can do AOE and single target better than the melee squig.

What mSH also brings into the table is Pierce defences tactic, incredibly good debuff.

But yes, Choppa is more damage, and yes you pretty much only want one mSH in WB.
