Nah, the simplification of a universal currency is much better.... one thing that bogs down MMOs that age is when they have way to many floating currencies in the game...
The issue is not with the currency, that part is great. The issue is with the formula they did when converting the currencies into a universal one.
Not to mention the ratio of how many tokens you acquire now is still slow compared to the price-cost of the sets; in part due to the higher and higher costs of sets... and the tier set thottling (see below).
the most absurd thing is also throttling players by forcing them to back-purchase older tier sets just to acquire the higher tier sets. It is incredibly redundant to force players to purchase tier sets they are never going to equip just to purchase the next tier set.
Its simply a way to cause new players and fresh 40s to have a longer/grindier time before they can ever compete with highly geared players. I'm curious to the design choice for this latter mechanic (the tier set throttling)...
If you want to retain new players that are coming in with this new launch/announcement of land of dead, then you need to have catch-up systems that reward new blood for staying. ATM, the game is a grind-fest and forces new players to be fodder for the zerg-fest... and sit and grind for weeks to months, spending hours a day to inevitably catch up.
The only players that really stick around are those that played live and have nostalgia goggles on... most new blood who are trying this out for the first time are going to quit fast because the systems in place are unfavorable to retaining them.
The simplification of currency is great, they just need to fix the drop rate/amount you get... and also lower the cost of tier sets, and above all, Remove the damn throttling rule by forcing players to have to buy preceding sets.
Old veterans might bitch and moan that "oh we're rewarding casuals, blah blah blah, they need to bleed and earn their gear, we can't hand them free loot!"....
uhmm...yea you kind of want to, thats how you increase your playerbase and grow population, new player retention requires catch-up mechanics so they can compete and immediately get thrown into the fray with fellow high-levels.
Otherwise the population just stays the same... like its always been... the same pool of players never growing..
Do you give them BIS gear for free? no.... but you can provide methods to ease the manner in which they can accrue competitive gear so they're at least able to stand up at fresh 40.
Because as of now, a lot of fresh 40s are running around with incredibly low-level gear because the XP rates have been accelerated, but the token rates have not, and with this backwards gear throttling..... A lot of 40s that had logged out after a long time or are returning to check out the game are now in a worse spot then even new fresh level 1 players.
