Looks like I am having the same issue as HawaiiMike. I'm running Windows 7 x64; i've tried most of the suggestions from this thread and the other common suggestions from other posts (run as admin, tried both launchers, moved folder locations, ensured folder is not read only and tried tspray's method, firewall is off, not running anti-virus, and tried multiple variations of passwords). I have not tried re-downloading the client yet, so that is next on my list (originally downloaded the client from the torrent).

Ok guys. try this BUT keep in mind that it will only work for only one login (after you exit the game and try to get online again it will not work ..and it will give you the same error again Authentication failed--application will now terminate)
Download the 5 part .rar files from the site using your browser.
extract the files where you want using the part number 5 or 4 see which one works
copy the jefawks mini ror launcher in the game folder
just run it. Plain and simple ! no read-only stuff no nothing. the jefawks mini ror launcher uses "run as admin" by default. Sometimes it works ...sometimes it doesn't. But when it doesn't work (as i stated above for the second login) just repeat the whole proccess . Restart your computer -> extract files -> extract the jefawks mini ror launcher in the game folder -> run the game and enjoy.
This is the only method i have been able to play in like 2 months of looking for a fix. After it doesn't work again just delete the whole game folder and repeat the proccess! i hope someone who has more knowledge than me sees my post and can explain what is happening here!! because sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't and so on. I hope it works for you guys... i have been able to play like 3 days now just by repeating the proccess. Good luck

Thanks for your insight!....that explains why I got it to work exactly three times with all the methods but each time was once only...doesn't make much sense and I really hope someone can figure out a permanent solution.

Per tspray's suggestion, I downloaded the 5 part client from mega and used jefawks mini ror launcher. I extracted it from part 1 and was able to successfully log-in and as tspray indicates, subsequent log-ins fail with the same Authentication Error. I tried deleting the game, restarting, re-extracting the client, and logging in but have not yet been able to actually log-in a second time. I will try again over the next couple days to see if i can get it to work (and hopefully consistently).

In the mean time, just in case it helps anyone, here are the logs from the successful log-in and then the failed log-in that happened shortly after.

I've tried the torrent and the 10 part downoad so far without success. I'll try tspray's method and do the five part mega download just for giggles to see if it works. I'll post back to let you know if it's working on my end of or not.

I've been troubleshooting for the last couple hours. I didn't really have any success with re-extracting the client. I tried altering the time out length from the config file from the default 24 seconds to 60 seconds to see if that would help, but it did not.

I then just started launching the game repeatedly and interestingly enough, I did successfully log in a few times, but i would say it is about less than 5% of the time when launching the game that it successfully logs in, every other time i just get the Authentication Failed error. The fact that i was able to successfully log in randomly is quite puzzling. I will keep fiddling around, but I'm not sure what direction to go now

Tab what launcher are you using ? mine works only with the JeFawks one...

I have also tried using the regular RoRLauncher, but don't seem to have as much luck with it

I fixed my issue, i no longer get the "Critical Error: Authentication Failed" error, hopefully this helps others

My issue had something to do with the authentication piece during login. As reference for others, I am connecting from California

I decided to try using a VPN service to see if that made a difference and it is what is now letting me consistently log in, but there is an extra step.

I personally decided to download Cyber Ghost 5; it is free, they have servers in the UK, and reviews seemed to be mostly positive; download and use at your own risk, I am sure there are other VPN services that will work just fine.

Step 1) First I launch Cyber Ghost 5; i select UK from the "Simulated Country" drop down on the bottom left,I leave "Simulated IP Address" on the bottom right as Automatic, and then click the "power" button on the bottom middle to connect.

Step 2) Open and log-in with either RORLauncher or JeFawks Mini RoR Launcher v1.3 (Both work for me).

Step 3) Once you are on the server selection screen, switch over to Cyber Ghost 5 (or whatever VPN service you are using) and disconnect.
NOTE: When I left the VPN connected and tried to get past the server selection screen, i would just get the message saying i timed out.

Step 4) Go back to the game and click the "Select" button on the server selection screen and it connects without an issue.

I will note that my ping to the server's IP is actually a fair bit faster without the VPN, so i'm not quite sure why the VPN fixes the authentication piece yet fails to actually connect to the server, but this method works for me.
