Naming Problem

Hello. I've never played this game before, and I'm very much looking forward to trying it out, but I'm having some frustrating problems trying to create a character.
At first, I tried the name "Tor", and it said that it was either taken or invalid, which confused me, because searching that name up on the Armory showed no such result. I later realized that the Armory only seems to be capable of displaying 20 results, with no way to get more results or a second page. So I started organizing by level and renown, and checking each class individually. I finally found that the name is taken by a (seemingly inactive) Warrior Priest.
So then I punched in "Tór" into the Armory, and the only result this time is "Inquisitór", which shows that such an accent mark should be possible, and that there's no chance that "Tór" would be taken. I've found several posts that say that if you get an invalid name error message, then you need to completely close down the client and the launcher, wait a few minutes, and then boot it back up and try again. So I've tried that multiple times, but it still says that "Tór" is invalid or taken.
I tried punching in just "ór" into the Armory, and that gave me a handful of results, one of which was "Thrór". So I figured that maybe the Armory is just buggy with accent marks, and it's really "Thror". Or maybe the game allows the accent marks, but doesn't actually distinguish them as being different characters. So I punched in "Thror", and found that that is also a different character, with a different level, and a different renown value.
So then I tried "Tòr". Also doesn't work, but it has zero results in the Armory.
I then tried "Tör", and that didn't work. That one is like "Tór", in that it only has one result, in which the three letters are only a piece, and not the entire name.
So then I tried "Aajdfhajksdhgajgag" (or some such) without even closing down the client (or exiting the server) after getting the error message, and that did work.
Am I missing something here? What am I doing wrong? If someone could shed some light on this, I would appreciate it. I'll come up with a different name if I really have to, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't seem like I should have to.
EDIT: I've also seen several characters in the armory with three letter names (even three letter names with an accented vowel like this), so I know it's not that (especially since I found that "Tor" is taken in the first place).

I believe accent marks and umlauts are barred from use in new names now.
