How many armor should I use as a 1h tank?

My SM can be around 6900 armor (with SM buff) as the terminated armor. It is over 150% reducing dmg

However, all known a number 75% is a cap for it. But physical dmg player always have armor pen let say around 40%

so the Mit formula is

armor% * (1-armor pen %) = 1.5 * 0.6 = 0.9 ( 90%)
but cap is 75% so it is reducing to 75%

Am I correct???

Or the cap is start from just armor%??? If I have 150% just reduce to 75%, then pass through armor pen 40% become 0.45 which is 45%
Which one Correct????
What is the best armor number to use????

Don't forget armor debuffs...

With ~ -1800 from skills (M1, Skills) you're already at 5100

-40% you're at 3100 armor left from 6900.

Volgo made a good post about that in an armor related thread, too lazy to search for atm.

But i think you're good to go with that amountyou have.

If I dont go that amount I can slot more str or toughness or initiative, so I ask with this post

If 75% cap is corrected after passing through armor pen, the skill to reducing armor is almost useless to 6900 armor

6900 is a bit much. Having just armour isn't the be all and end all. Generally you want enough to absorb most normal forms of armour reduction debuffs that being around 1200. Considering the cap is 3300 you want around 4500. You'd also want to invest in wounds and perhaps some toughness. Wounds will allow you to survive morale dumps and toughness is more effective against DOT. You'd prob also either want some jewels that give you more armour so you don't need to invest as many talis into armour. But also look into investing into stuff that has parry, dodge/disrupt and perhaps stuff that has high magic resistance as casters will nuke you down.

Depends entirely on whether you are doing scenarios, solo/6 man roam, or full warband stuff.
For warband, pure HP is more important because of destro's obsession with 'muh morale bombs'. Plus you'll be getting pelted with a gorillion PBAoEs from the sorcs. Otherwise, armor is better.

yeah, I don'T even remember what I said lol. But 6900 is too much. You lose on too much other things considering :
1- WE ignore armor
2- Mara basically ignore armor
3- choppa have insane penetration from WS.
4- Sorc, magus, sham, and zealot ignore armor.

Over a lot of tests, anything above 5500-6000 seem like a bad investment. I know I did the maths with all the calculation swapping +180 armor talis for +23 toughness, +80 resist, +23 wouds and all that. Can'T find it though.

The thing is, the more you stack, the more you lose vs high WS or armor ignore ability.

as an FYI, the amount of armor you need to realistically be capped at 75% mitigation mostly all the time vs 50% armor pen and a plethora of armor debuff is over 9000.

So, since 9000 is ridiculous, the way I decide how much I use is by calculating from bad damage dealers such as 2h tank or dps dok. They run around 30% armor pen (30% pen, so I mitigate 70% of it or 0.7). So with a single debuff of -1000 armor (typical of BO/BG or morale only), I reverse engineer what I need. 75% mitigation is achieved at about 3300 armor so...
(?-1000)x0.7 = 3300
so ?=(3300/0.7)+1000 = 5714. Which will leave me right at the cutoff of 75% mit. Hence anything within reasonable margin of this number is good enough for me. This number also has the advantage of being achievable and leaving room to invest in other things such as wounds, strength or toughness :p

This is more or less how i go about it. Only my opinion.

No I don't. I only count the debuffs as people specing weapon skill for armour pen is unlikely as it doesn't scale well. And my view is as long as you are around the 75% cut off, -10-20% is acceptable with all debuffs and pen included. Why? Because as I said before armour is only 1 part of combat. As others have mentioned some classes completely ignore armour and you WILL melt if you throw tons of focus into armour. The thing you have to think about is what your job is. As a tank, your job is to SOAK damage and hold the line. Now if you throw everything into armour, anything melee that can't ignore armour will be unable to defeat you. But everyone else will be able to squash you. Especially morale dump abilities, and in RvR if you can't take a morale dump you're worthless. So the best thing to do is spread the points out. 3300-4500 armour, 8khp+ and however much toughness you feel is needed (toughness mitigates all damage but mostly affects DOTs). And for renown, in my book damage avoidance is always better than mitigation(unless it's so inefficient that it's not worth it ).
