Guard is the one ability, that more than anything defines - nay, yells - teamplay in this game.

Guard someone (or get a guard), stick to each other, assist on the same target and prosper.

When I play a dps and pug it, I mark and often assist on whoever is guarding me, if I feel that the tank is not following/assisting me - just to prevent that we don't split up too much.

As it is, Guard (either giving it or recieving it) enhances your situational awareness and gives you a basic sense of the benefits of teamplay - and an edge over anyone not doing the same. Which is what this game is all about.

Removing it, or making it into some lazy, short-time aoe-ability, would hurt that most vital aspect of the game and dumb it down even further.

I agree heal is the problem. This doing by healers is definitly too strong. Side which have more heals usually win fight. Game is unplayable without healers. I think this could be balanced by reduction CD healing potions and upgrade ability "regeneration" and some self heal abilities.

Are we really discussing an issue because is solo/duo player unfriendly?
What a joke.

Gate your also making the assumption that the guard mechanic is a major reason for the drop in population numbers on the server.

I think you are wrong in this assumption. (my opinion)

There are many many reasons on why there has been a drop in population numbers and I don't think a major reason for that is the guard mechanic.

Dak, you know that, for example, good tanks (which I'm not) have to do a huge load of work, specially in one tank composition. If we speaking about chosen/kotbs is a bit easier, but still not so brainless as many people think (I find way more brainless spamming the same rotation as sorc/bw expecting healers to keep your suicidal ass alive and a tank to drag you out of the poop pool when focused) but imagine a BG and the number of buttons he has to press. Adding a gcd and cooldown of a guard skill would be the absolute death of that class.

Reworking guard won't suddenly make people start using their brains. It is a community problem - and not a mechanic problem. Those people you speak of in your very specific hypothetical situation won't suddenly think 'wow! I have a reason to use my guard!'. If they're not using their guard already - even though it mitigates 50% of your guarded teammate's damage - then they're just idiots. What more incentive do you need, seriously?!

It's like saying, 'I'm not going to cast this 2 second heal, even though it could heal that teammate back to 100% from 12%, because it isn't fun. No, I think I'll just stand here and wait'. If you don't find the tank archetype fun/engaging, then play a DPS.

If an idiot is not utilising his abilities, or playing his archetype as per its description, it is his problem - and not the game's.
But what with People who want play DPS tank or DPS healer and they are not interest guard or heal somebody because this is their weak side, and they are spec in DPS?
