I'm currently this:

http://waronlinebuilder.org/#career=eng ... 3646:3656:

Full armor talis, toughness, armor pots.
Balistic skill is around 400.

The build is actually not a classical Grenadier. Classical Grenadier would be with Grenade Range and radius increase tactic.
But the build is the Napalm friend. (Me) of the magnet Engineer at my side.

This build is to me the tinkerer dps build : that what I wanted to try but what if you turn a bit more crit and bs ?

So is Tinkerer a viable melee-ish spec? It seems like its meant to live in this grey area right outside regular melee range and sort of duck and weave in and out. Correct me if Im wrong, I have zero experience with it, just looking at the tree.

A well-played tinkerer will be in melee range 80% of the time, relying on good defensive stats (armor stacking/tactic, and high disrupt from pet) and morale bombs. Very annoying to come up against as a destro player!

Tinkerer is viable as support tree , it require to stack high def stats (toughness, armor, crit reduce) using flameturret for dodge / disrupt buff (it'd also debuff your range to 40%) but allow you to survive in melee .
Using annihilator set is a must have for this path
Its getting better with high RR .
For starting /leveling I'd suggest you to chose rifleman / grenadier .

Ahah true ! Love my cast time increase mine in destro caster !
Everytime I show up in sc , I can see how many destro focusing me / try to bump me out far away from fight , thats when I realized how much I ennoying them !

So Tinkerer is sort of set bonus dependent compared to rifleman and grenadier then? Some of the tactics seem to provide really nice foundations for such a build, like the armor tactic and the 2 tactics that essentially give 15% crit chance and damage inside your "at home" range.

is there a tree that is the obvious go to for leveling or are they all pretty ok?

All tree are good but rifleman would be the best path For leveling imo.
You'll realize that to stacking def stats on tinkerer , you'd sacrifice dps stats ( a really tinkerer would turn around 350/390 BS , some of them try to use crit tactic to compensate but to me it not gives much more difference to your low dps and you have to take off a support tactic tool .
You can try "hybrid" build also (half def , half dps) but from my experience being average never makes you better.

So is the added tankiness from tinkerer disproportional to the dps you lose compared to rifleman? It seems like not having to worry about kiting and casting would lead to a better leveling feel and a more forgiving RvR experience.

Rifleman got range buff and damage boost from gunturret so this is the path where to go for burst . You don't have huge survivability to you better stay far away from fight on that build and kill caster / light armor fast .
Tinkerer is not meant to do dmg he is usually in melee for buff / debuff . The 2 path are really different
