Cannot get off character screen

I was in the game, and noticed I had no npc's around me. I tried to exit the game to restart the whole thing, but it refused. I ended the task, but when I try to get back on, it loads the character screen, asks me to choose a server (I do) puts forth my last played character, but when I hit play it says the server has ended my connection. It just does this over and over again....I haven't changed a thing.
