Brand new player seeking guild/friend/mentor?

Hey there, I am a very long time gamer who is looking to try something new I have some friends who raved about how great the game was but at the time I had many other commitments that inhibited me from being able to play. I am however now with a much more free schedule looking to give the game a try and would like someone that I am able to socialize with/learn from as to be quite frank I am going to be clueless.

I am a very competitive person with a drive to be good at anything I do. I have no idea what I am doing in this game but I have a long standing history in MMOs and have remained competitive in every game I played up until the point that I quit and plan to be in this game assuming I hit if off and enjoy it which I think I will.

I am unsure what faction/class I am going to play but the closest thing to what I think I would want to play would be something like a Mage from WoW or a class that is strong in 1v1 scenarios. I just dont want to be helpless if I get picked on out in the world. Open to suggestions as said I am new and pretty clueless lol.

I am EST but my play time ranges anywhere from noon to 4 in the morning depending on my day to day schedule.

I apologize if this was in the wrong forum but I was a little unsure what specifically this would lie under.

Hey there,
I would browse the Order/Destruction guild forum sections and take a look at some that are recruiting, there are a bunch on this server that are super welcoming and helpful (if you end up choosing Order, something like Shadows of Divinity is great for people who are new to this server and can help you get up and battle ready in no time).
I've never played WoW so I can't help you there, but a good solo class if you are just starting out is a DPS AM or Shaman, can heal yourself while killing so it's the best of both worlds I guess c:. Other than that, there's so many to choose from and each has its ups and downs in the 1v1 you're looking for, so I would say just to play around with different classes.
