Nostalrius (Private WoW Server) Shutting Down

The devs for the private WoW server, Nostalrius, received a letter of formal notice from US and French lawyers acting on behalf of Blizzard to prepare to stand trial. In response, the devs are shutting down the private server.

While it's sad news, there is currently a change.org petition floating around asking Blizzard to reconsider their policies/procedures related to this private server. Hopefully, some positive change will come from it.

As someone with personal experience with blizzard lawyers and emulated servers. Even taking down the server won't stop them from suing if they are making money. The only reason my old server didn't get sued is because I refused to take money. I stopped doing the server when all the developers left to join a server that paid them and was making money. Guess what, they all ended up getting sued.

Wow is a really active game still its not shut down like WAR is, its blizzards choice nothing we can do

Here is a good article on what happened in 2010. This server here was where all my developers went. The story is amazing and one day I should write a book on everything that happened with mmorpg4free.

It is a sad news :/ I just started a character over there. I was some kind of Blizzard fan back then - Diablo 2, Vanilla Wow, Warcraft, Blackthorne - but it seems they aged out, lost the talent and got greedy.

Im not a native english speaker so maybe Im wrong but as far as I understand they accepted money for keep up a stable server. I do not consider it as making money off.

If they pay a host provider with it or not is not relevant.
Money got transfered from player to Server dev = making money out of it.
