In the last week or so, a new trend has arisen in the Open RvR: players insist that warbands must be closed when full, otherwise they will crash. There are several variations to the alleged reasons, but most involve players trying to join full warbands resulting in a crash.
There are a few things that I know from personal experience: closed warbands will also crash, warbands that are not full will also crash. Occasionally, even groups as small as parties will experience mass crash symptoms (multiple people crashing at the same time). Trying to join full warbands, which can happen if the Open Parties&Warbands menu shows the warband with 23 members when loaded/refreshed, but the last spot is filled up before you can click join, does not necessarily crash the warband, at least I haven't seen the warband disappear afterwards so far.
When advocates of the closed warband theory are told that closed warbands crash, even guild warbands that never were open or have potentially malicious people in it trying to crash it (another theory out there) will crash, their answer is that closing the warband will make it less likely to crash. Since it's extremely unlikely any player has any reliable statistics on this (or even aware whether or not a warband was open when the unexpected crash occurs), this seems to be based on a personal impression, which is often subject to bias of all kinds. It also offers a specific confirmation bias that, should a warband crash, since players were likely unaware of it being open or not exactly at the time of the crash (they likely don't monitor that status constantly), they can believe it was open because it crashed and thus it crashed because it was open.
On the other hand, this is already leading to complaints, pointing fingers and generally increasing stress on public warband leaders since they are blamed for the crashes should they occur and for allegedly putting the warband at risk if they don't comply. Also, should the warband leader close the warband, usually it'll stay that way until it misses at least one party from the 24 (since warband leaders tend to have other things to do too, not stay on the Open Parties and Management screen, especially during those massive siege battles where mass crashes are so frequent), leaving the warband weaker and players without a group, going against the basis of the open parties and warbands system. It also makes it more difficult to see what one's realm is doing and where.
What I'd like to ask here is an opinion from the RoR devs and GMs, rather than the often uninformed players, on the subject: is a warband being open or closed related to the mass crashes in any way, or is this the mass hysteria it seems to be?

Re: Mass crashes and open warbands
In my experince trying to join full wb only scews with your own aura buffs. And sometimes when joining a wb that has some kinda bug it crashes the client for the person who tries to join it. And keeps happening if that player tries again. As for mass crashes i think it has something to do with areas with portals to different location in that area. Like keep doors and postern doors.

Are you talking about the "aura spread failure" message? I think that was solved together with the bugged warband spots a while ago.roadkillrobin wrote:In my experince trying to join full wb only scews with your own aura buffs.
