Well, again i have been asked to stop and to put it on the forums so here it is.
The topic at hand is the implementation of the russian language channel, personally, i think its a terrible idea, here are some reasons why:
A) Chat channels are finite: This is the key of the issue, if they werent, there wouldnt be an issue at all, specific channels for each language are a completely normal thing. Problem is RoR only has 9 available, that means we have 1 left, nothing more. There will be no chat for any other language as far as i know.
B) Here is where we keep the Russians: Being the only nationality that merits its own chat channel looks bad, real bad, like, we had to create this pen for them to play because we cant let them free with everyone else, i know is not the staff intention, i know it was not the idea behind it but for most people, is how it looks at first glance.
C) Justification: Look, i played games long enough on the internet, i played a lot of dota, i know better than anyone the stigma some nationalities have, be it Brazil, Peru, SEA countries or Russia, this is just fuel to the fire, specially when the staff doesnt have a clear stance on it, here is Aza saying he will kick people out of the other channels for speaking russian http://www.returnofreckoning.com/forum/ ... 55#p116055 however here is a moderator Druin stating they wouldnt be doing so http://www.returnofreckoning.com/forum/ ... 51#p116151 . That is a big issue, there was already people berating others for speaking Russian, now we have people who think they have a justification for doing so.
D)It wouldnt hurt any of you learning a language that is not **** english.
So thoughts?

Re: Babel Tower
How large is the russian population in RoR, exactly? If it is large enough i don't see any problem with giving them their own chat channel.
10 guys speaking Korean, or 20 speaking Spanish don't merit a whole chat channel for themselves.
Most of french/german/spanish speaking players are perfectly fluent in english so i don't see a problem in not giving them their own channel as well.
I guess only devs know these numbers.

Re: Babel Tower
I understand this, but as i mentioned, maybe the russian population is larger than the other ones i mentioned. So having their own channel is actually good for them. Keep in mind they are not banned from the other channels, but it would be nice if they used english in those.bloodi wrote:This is as true for Russian people as it is for everyone else.Penril wrote:Most of french/german/spanish speaking players are perfectly fluent in english so i don't see a problem in not giving them their own channel as well.
It is a little thing called respect: If most of the playerbase speaks the same language, why not use it? I have had long conversations with Thousandsunny and Chaoselza (native spanish speakers) in /ad channel using english, simply out of respect for the rest of the player base. We don't own that channel. However, when we send tells, we use spanish for the most part.
Most bilingual people know english as a second language, so it totally makes sense to use english in the main channel of a online game. If most russians also know english but still refuse to use it, then giving them their own channel so they can use their native language makes complete sense to me.
Anyway, that's what i think.
Re: Babel Tower
I know it is fairly large. Not sure about 1/3 though.Soulcheg wrote:1/3Penril wrote:How large is the russian population in RoR, exactly?
Anyway, being so large, i don't see what's the problem with giving them a channel of their own (on top of the other ones they can freely use). Is it insulting or something? I would like to read a reply from a russian player, and see if he feels offended by this (or grateful).
Idk. If they don't want that channel, i'll take it
