I think the general premise of OP is correct (shocking as that is). Melee pets always functioned terribly in the presence of aoe. Loner tactic is just a band aid to a basic design flaw. I would hope that the dps patch address this. Also, make pounce great again. This is not at all what I or OP ...

killboard assigns the kill to the player who inflicted the most damage, so not necessarily to the one who inflicted the final blow. open a combat and you will see the % of damage dealt by each player and the skill used
