new player dps question and guilds

So I started the game and played both sides a little bit but I liked the feel of the order side. I was thinking I want to play a Dorf slayer but not sure if they are something I should start with. Basically I want something competitive yet self sufficient. I like the idea of warrior priests but it seems like they lack good dps. Is the slayer a top tier dps class or should I consider something else?
Also how would I go about finding a guild that actually groups up for eve AND levelling pve?

Slayer is a top tier group oriented melee dps. It can solo well, if played well and geared for it. However, it's not naturally inclined to solo as other melee dps like WH/WE or as strong as Mara solo.
I'd say Mara (Destro) is the strongest all around melee dps, as it's amazing solo and in groups. Slayer is a close second, it's very strong in groups and can do well solo (just keep your rage in check when 1v1ing).

Welcome to RoR!
There are several guilds on Order, but I'm not sure any of them group up for PvE a whole lot. the focus of this server is Realm Vs Realm combat. That's important to understand as a new player. Notice I didn't say Player versus Player. Its a group game. It takes a group to be successful in this game. I point this out because you stated you wanted to be "Self Sufficient" If by self sufficient you meant able to do top end dps and heal yourself and be tanky enough to take on a lot of players and win, you will not find that solo class in this game (thank god).
Your best bet is to play the class that you feel best suits your playstyle while at the same time learning how this game is actually played. It plays differently than almost every other MMO in that group synergies are necessary. You won't level your slayer and have fun in combat without a minimum of a decent healer or a decent tank with you. Sure you will do decent damage, but you'll be respawning very often.
My advice is to learn your class and your role in the group. How to stay in control and situationally aware in Scenarios and Open RvR. Learn what you bring to the other classes and ensure you are providing that for them or else you will end up solo and dead.
One last thing, "Top DpS" is a matter beyond just picking a DpS class. The top DPS can be almost any class if he/she has the gear, spec, group support and skill to be top dps. Sure some classes can spam meaningless fluff or "pressure) damage and top the SC chart numbers, but they dont contribute a lot to the success of the team. It's not about the numbers, it's about the team dynamic and the results (i.e. Kills).
again, Welcome! I hope you find the game as challenging and fun as I think it is.

Ok so lets se if i can help you
So you wnt something on order, that is:
1) self sufficient
2) competitive
Now by self sufficient i assume that you mean can solo and roam without a grp and is a pretty good duelist and what not
Well let me preface by saying that all classes can play solo and roam and stuff, its all about picking your battles, granted their are some classes that do it better than others
now back to slayers, they are very strong and are pretty competitive as the standard ordo 6 man is 1 kotbs, 1 iron breaker, 2 slayers and 2 healers
the problem is that they are not "self sufficient" as slayers are melee glass cannons so the require heals and guard to survive due to their class mechanic
2 classes i think you might like are Archmage who is a pretty strong roamer and the second being iron breaker who you can play as 2h or snb, a very strong nd durable tank with pretty nice dueling potential due to grumble and mutter ability
if you roll ironbreaker the bitterstone thunderer's guild would be happy to recruit you

If you build your Slayer defensive. With toughness, parry and manage your rage (rage dumping when your taking increased dmg), you can solo well vs other melee. (Switch to offensive builds when grouping)
Your never going to be a Mara, but you can do alright.
Once you get Def/Off SoV mix you can solo very well.

The op wants to play order stop trying to subtly make him be a filthy mara picker like you

Lol I'm a filthy Sorc, didn't you hear they're OP

(Just not as OP as dirty BWs)
He used the term "top tier" and seemed to have a interest in group and solo. I think Mara is the best fix for this category.
Order side, Slayer is the top dog melee dps wise, but it has a harder time soloing. It can be done tho, if one builds for solo play. :DD
(I do get your joking tho ^_- )

True but 2h iron breakers are some of the pretty good too, with crit dots and good sustain

they could take on 2/3 people in a row if they know how to play their class
