What is the purpose of Macros?

I am told you cannot macro abilities. What are they used for?

save fixed messages like guild ad, trade posts, discord invite links
have certain /scripts ready to use
for addons

A big use is for swift assist. An addon with marcos that allow you to assign a main DPS (person who chooses targets to focus on) and then switch to the target to focus your DPS.
