I'm mainly a single target Engi but was looking to see if anyone could help me figure out what gear to buy so I don't waste marks later on down the road.

You will waste marks now anyway.
As a st engi I think you need sets with no additional armor set bonuses, no additional grenadier point bonuses and so on. There are things that are most needed for that style - like additional range (Invader) and additional WS (since you will meet accuracy cap at some point anyway and destro have too many tanks).
For pre invader I think vanq is okay - you will suffer anyway really so why bother.
As for past invader - I like gearwrench Sov set (the one with offensive bonuses).
Plus there is a blue ring on auction house which gives something like +2 AP regen and usual accuracy and WS.

7 offensive sov 2 sentinel (belt+ring), 2 genesis, fort handgun, bloodlord spanner. Full BS talismans or 1 armour rest BS.

Pretty much.
Sov Offensive makes your crits ofter and harder.

I am still running on my full Warlord because I really like the Restraining shot that roots an enemy 10seconds on the spot and can only be broken by abilities, not by damage. Which is quite handy if you hunt goblins.

But like on the above set you could mix in 2 Sentinel items for ranged power.
And take the Ranged Power Soulstone into the Sentinel Ring.

Also with the new Lotd there is an Jewel+Cape combination that gives +100 ranged power.

But I am not sure on that full BS Talismans. The sets +tactic should get you at softcap If I am not wrong.

There are too many good tactics on Engi, you'd rather be at softcap without needing stat tactics AFAIK.

I think someone made the math some years ago. Basic stat tactics are good, but most other tactics better in raw damage. Be it extra crits or signal flares extra damage.
So you are right.
