My friends and I are recent immigrants from DAoC, and not having a compass to orient with each other is really messing with us in fights.

There is one in the game by default. Next time you're in a party with your buddy. Look down on the ground under your characters feet. There should be a arrow pointing to party members as well as a indicator showing where North is.
