What worked for me to fix sound issues

I have installed the game 3 or 4 times in the past month. Each time something would cause the game to stop working. Sound never worked properly either. NPC's didn't talk to me, mobs didn't make sounds while fighting etc. Just background music and some combat sounds. It kind of ruined immersion but I love this game so I played anyway.
UNTIL... I installed it using the torrent file.
I followed this guide: viewtopic.php?t=31241#p353953
and now everything is working. So thank you Lilim for making the guide and posting it!
