DEFINITIVE RVR & PVE Guide.

The wall crushed beneath the mighty cannon blow. Debris were constellating the scene everywhere. The soldiers raised on their feet. Not everyone had made it...
"Sir! Enemies incoming!" Shout the soldier while falling prey of panic.
"Reform the line and hold position! they must pay in blood every single meter of terrain they will earn!"
The men obey. Some of them with doubts in their hearts. Others with fear. The ground was trembling under the enemies unstoppable advance. Behind the battallion, the city was looking to an indifferent sky.
"They will never have the holy shrine from this place! No one shall falter in front of our Lord! Shame on those who fall without require ten times the tribute in enemy lifes!"
One by another, the men look at their commander. They are just men, of course, bur wasn't Sigmar teaching that the most little debris can cause an avalanche if tossed correctly?
resolution start to make his way into the heart of the batallion.
"From the fear and hatred, my Lord, deliver me..." starts chanting in low voice one soldier. His comrades look upon him.
"from the pain and misery, My Lord , deliver us; from the shame of the fallen, My Lord , deliver us. From the temptation of power, My Lord, deliver us..."
The Captain hear the pray. Proudly turns himself towards the regiment.
"So this will be our last stand. We will stand with honor. All will recognize the courage of men." thinks.
"You - pointing his fingers toward the enemy horde - filthy scums! Here you shall find the steel for your guts! This wall of men will never falter under any of your sorcery nor weapon! We are the guards of Altdorf! We will stand our ground! We spit on your gods! We will end you!"

It took years! :D So whatever you deem worth adding or removing or simply modifying from this guide, just lemme know!

Section 1: Basic concept of RPRVR/PVE

The most frequent difficulty on RP-PvP or normal RP servers comes from the expectations of disgruntled would be role-players. A small percentage have their own idea on the way RP should be, that don't feel there is enough RP, or maybe simply feel left out. As a result, forum threads declaring that RP is dead are commonplace. RP-PvP is commonly misunderstood to mean that the roleplaying part is optional.

Due to that i will commence clarifying.

RVR =Realm vs realm (commonly referred as PVP[player vs player])
PVE = Player vs Environment (human player vs computer controlled enemies)

Roleplaying is a way for people to express themselves and their creativity while having fun at the same time. Roleplaying was popularized with Dungeons and Dragons, a pen-and-paper (PnP) RPG. Since the dawn of the computer age, roleplaying has shifted from board games to video games. Roleplaying in an MMO is vitally different than roleplaying by yourself, as there are as many rules as there are people. However, there is a general consensus of the rules of roleplay, which have been laid out in my previous guide.
On RP servers, roleplayers have a marked tendency to be shy and reclusive towards the general server population, with the vast majority of roleplay taking place in guild or party chat. General and Advice channels are usually considered out of character by default, (particularly Advice). Do your best not to type OOC unless you have to.

Here as follows a little section on the basic "Typical guy" characters you may find in MMO servers while roleplay! (it deserved to be posted!)

VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW! Anti-Roleplayers
These players will deliberately go out of their way to ruin your immersion and experience, in game and out. They do so by forum trolling signified roleplay posts, spamming /say and emotes (oh god /dance) during a roleplay session or other annoyances that distract from your roleplaying experience (Spamming various spells, and giving no ic responses when eyebrows are raised at their naked dancing). Basically, the AR is the kid knocking over sand castles at the beach; they can't be bothered putting effort into building something up, so they'll feel better if they destroy someone else's work. While the AR seeks to show some kind of superiority to get you to buckle, ignoring their subversion is the best response. Find a really big rock and build your sand castle around it. This behavior on a roleplaying server is considered a form of griefing, and it is a reportable offense.
You could always just treat them like an ooc object, and act like they're not there and their fire spells and raining arrows aren't actually raining down upon you. After all, they're not roleplaying.

Light Roleplayer (LR)
Ah, this is where it starts to get fun! Welcome to the first tier of playing a character. Light roleplaying is when you start to modify your responses to seem more appropriate for your character. Light roleplay usually involves characters that are very similar in personality to you, as to take some of the complexity away from the experience. To some people, this is a good balance between what is enjoyable without being pedantic. The characters motivations are more or less the same as your own, but with a twist. Out of character chat is not uncommon or looked down upon, party chat is best left OOC. At this level, some players may choose to take up an accent appropriate for race.

Medium-Light Roleplayer
A Medium-Light Roleplayer is, as the name implies, sandwiched somewhere between a Medium Roleplayer and a Light Roleplayer. Generally, they are Light Roleplayers but display characteristics of a Medium one, such as a developed back-story or their character differs somewhat from their own personality. However, unlike medium ones, and like light ones, they have few issues with shattering their own immersion (although they will do their best to avoid shattering the immersion of others) and no issues with OOC communication.

For example, in this SPOIILER i imagina a MLR leaving a roleplay place to go into raid/instance or whatever!
Spoiler:
Indifferent RP: u ready, yet <name>?
M-L RPer: Farewell, friends! Perhaps I'll live through this and I'll see you again.
Heavy RPer: Ach, with skills like yers, I'd be more worried 'bout the <insert faction of raid here>!
Medium RPer: Nevertheless, farewell friend, and take this blessing of Isha before you go!
M-L RPer: Thank you! (Heads into the instance portal)
M-L RPer: It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I'm all outta gum. Who brought the damn fish feasts? I need to know which one of you goofs gets what. Did so and so just face pull again? rofl
Indifferent RP: new version of (enter addon name here) is up
M-L RPer: Since when?!
Medium Roleplayer
A bit of a step up, here are some of the differences to a light roleplayer. Medium Roleplayers usually have a back-story for their character that explains their past. This past helps to define the character in present and future actions. Medium roleplayers with accent classes will likely adopt it (or a suitable back story to explain otherwise), and speak mannerisms may be developed; Maybe an unusual accent, way of punctuating or getting a message across. Out of character chat is usually indifferent to a MR, but always denoted by ((<text>)) or OOC: <text>. In terms of being in a guild, a medium roleplayer will usually be found in a general rolepaying guild that has a heavier focus on roleplaying than other things or a themed guild.

Heavy Roleplayer
Heavy Roleplayer Edit
This is where roleplaying takes complete precedence over any aspect of the game. A player will not engage in player killing unless there is a motivation to. A player will probably not even run unless in haste. Every word that leaves the character's mouth belongs to that of the character, the player behind is probably a completely different person.
Immersion is paramount to the heavy roleplayer, as their entire enjoyment comes out of this. A heavy roleplayer will not stand for ARs, and even IRs to a degree. A heavy roleplayer is forced, even at the worst of times, to play as their character. Out of character talk is very, very sparse, always at least denoted by ((double brackets)); often whispers or party chat. A heavy roleplayer will not use the general chat channel. It is not uncommon for a HR to not use guild chat or any other long distance forms of communication, as this distracts from their immersion. A heavy roleplayer will always have a backstory, a clear sense of character, and a strong intention on future for a character. A HR character is ever changing, making their mark on the world and letting the world mould their character. In terms of being in a guild, a heavy roleplayer will probably be in a themed guild or a general roleplaying guild that is mostly focused on roleplaying, or they may not be apart of a guild, which has to do with their character (such as being a lone wolf), but chances are they will have connections of some kind to a roleplaying guild (themed or otherwise).

AFTER THIS NOTE LET S CONTINUE!

Rule of the Thumb: RPRVR is , in general speaking, when you impersonate a character into a RVR scenario or open world. To do so, you may, for example, do a macro that everytime you press that button your cahr says somethinhg.
For example: As Chosen, when i push the Toot of Tzeentch macro, my Char will say, "Take this infedel and bow to Nurgle's will!".
behaviour is different. Remember that RP RVR is difficult if NOT DONE with other roleplayers, because simply non rp ppl will try to exploit many game mechanics such as line of sight etc. WHILE rp will pretend to live throug their char. (to make a practicval example, in Gates of Ekrund some ppl jump off the walls to escape/engage enemy, while in a real life matter NO ONE would do such thing!) so for RP RVR is better, in my opinion, to agree with a guild of opposite faction, especially in OPEN RVR where you can advice NON PRERS that an event is occurring to avoid someone who is not aware of that to ruin it! (if you just whack an enemy withotu any advice and a rando player pass by he may be tempted to help you in killing your enemy thinking " i help my friend of faction!". Is not trolling, is normal open world RVR) for this reason COMMUNICATE on forum/advice chat that at some time a RVR roleplay event will take place.

How to fight in it?
SIMPLE! I give you an example.

It would be impossible to display graphically the wide range of movements and actions possible to characters, and emotes try to address this problem. Simply put, emotes are visible actions or physical descriptions. Warhammer has a massive amount of predefined emotes, as listed on the Emotes page. Some of these are animated, and some are textual. The real power of emotes comes from custom emotes, as done with the slash commands . Emotes are not for giving information, for showing what someone is thinking, nor for communicating OOC information. Anything you say or any actions your character takes must be within character. A good emote describes a physical event or action while allowing other characters to participate. Other characters cannot usually see "thoughts" or motivations, so emoting these will limit their opportunities to respond. Keep in mind when creating emotes that you need to leave room for a person to respond. If you want to punch someone, you "swing towards them" or "lunge rapidly". This allows the other player to decide whether or not his character gets hit. Do not "god-mode", where you give the other player no room to respond.

Example (from best option to WORST one!!!
Best: "You try to hit the orc with your axe." The orc can respond by dodging, attacking back, or even running away... the possibilities are limitless.

Good: "You swing your axe at the orc." The orc has ample time to respond, by parrying, grabbing the handle of your axe, kicking you off your feet. The possibilities are many.

Bad: "You hack the orc's arm off with your axe." The orc has lost an arm, is suffering massive blood loss and now needs to find a First Aid specialist. The possibilities are few.

Terrible "You kill the Orc, sending his head flying." The Orc is dead and you ruined and dominated the scene. The possibilities are almost nonexistent.<---THIS MUST BE AVOIDED UNLESS EXCEPTIONS I WILL EXPLAIN LATER!

Proper Emotes
There are some ways to emote that just don't fit within ROR emoting system. All emotes are done by the third person. An example would be:

Kailea looks down at her leather boots, disgusted by the dirt and grime that has accumulated.
Kailea looks down at her boots. They are intricately carved with runes rumoured to protect against shadow magic.

2) EXPRESS YOURSELF

On this section, aside from what told before in my other topic and here, I will demonstrate ya how to make sure your character can express himself throu movements, emotes and similar stuff.

2.1) EMOTES

Emotes in Warhammer Online are either animated with or without sound, or simply text emotes.
To use them, open chat tab with [enter] button then enter one as follows: (All currently known emotes in Warhammer Online)

2.2) Typing

Typing a complex emote, in warhammer online, allows your character to perform some specific, yet long actions that ARE NOT the ones forementioned in point 2.1.
For example, if you wanna be sure your roleplay fellow at the bar that you handle him a mug of ale, instead of only typing "Hey take this ale!" and nothing more (leaving the other waiting for your emote) use the following agreement:

open chat tab with [ENTER] button > Type the emote as follow: "((Hand over the mug of ale to the men right at his side, while sipping his own.))

This kind of command will be said in SAY CHAT so make appear a dialog cloud in the head of your char which is easily readable from everyone and in such way they will get your intentions without any mistake.

2.3) Physical

Although not a proper emote, make sure your character is acting like you wish! If, for example, you must walk a way with your friend in a tranquil place, avoid keeping weapons in your hands! Sheat em with the button "X" by default.

Another case is, in fact, if for example you must talk to someone: avoid staying too close! do not jump even around like a rabbit or spam the same command over and over.
The physic of your character is equally important as the emote system.
If, for example, you use the command /roar and start jump around into a tavern, people may be a little confused...

HOW TO...

After these needed explainations, we come to the part everyone wished to read since begin!

Bear in mind this is based on my personal experience of roleplayers since 8 years, nothing in this section shall discourage you from searching alternative ways to roleplay effectively and improve even more! Remember always to read this section as a general guideline, not like a bible!

The concept in these section are complex so please read carefully and, in case of further clarifications, do not hesitate to contact me in game or via pm!

3.1)RVR RoleplayImage

During the RVR events (open world) you must be sure of the following thing:
1)Advice community concerning event times and place, to avoid some mistake i listed earlier in this topic
2)Be sure all patecipants are familir with BASIC RP rules [being at least medium roleplayers]
3) Having ONE MODERATOR that will lead the event as a storyteller (this avoid dispute and favour the progression of the event)
4)Be sure ALL character are PROPERLY dressed for the event , having back up equipment in bag. (hardly you will see a chosen prisoner with full armor set and weapon in his hand no? do not fall on the absurd rule!)
5)Take accord for a general storyline (this is usually doe by event moderators, if any, or storyteller in his personal topic on the forum by explaining ACCURATELY what will happen!)

After these points, ALL person must make their macros for roleplay (yes they are needed to respect the rule "allow other to know hat you wanna do!")
Spoiler:
Warhammer macroes (still testing em)

The storyteller must then inform through Advice chat, raid or world or custom channel chat the begin of event. for example, if is a field battle between order and destruction, and the armies begin in their respective warcamps, the storyteller might be near the middle of the scenario and says in advice chat "Ok now order and destruction start the descent into the blasted city of Nordland, 5 people per side and keep all in stall (er. do not kill untill i say so). At this point all peoples MUST execute order and act as folow
Melee char will ONLY autoattack swing theyr weapon
Spellcaster will ONLY cast a spell each 10 seconds (moving or impersonating dodgin attacks
Ranged will Autoattack only and try to hide/use a skill once every 20 seconds.

This example is called SOFT RVR. and is used to make a particular RVR scenario go in a way that will enrich storyliine of warhammer.

The Heavy RVR is similar as above BUT leaving exception that all must fight as usual, attacking casting etc as they would normally do in any rvr situation during normal game. the ones who dies MUST NOT come back to battle unless storyteller says so (for example in case of a last stand scenario) to simulate the army loss of members in the struggle. The result hre depends strictly from inidviduals and the narrator must act and think consequently on how progress the event.

NOTE: As you can see is hard to explain every single matter that would happen in rvr scenarios, due to the fact that all players are made in different ways! This section I 've done is just to give you all an idea on how proceed in RVR situation. Of course my examples were simple and rough to make you better understand the mother logic of events RVR but after people get used to it, the thing might be done a lot more hard and complex, producing epic results.

Here in follow i found a youtube video of a old RVRRP event back in the days: im sure will help you make understand!

Click here to watch on YouTube
Notice how the narrator follows in first person because filming yet folowing and spectating the arrangememnt of people and the fight. Ofc narrators can be more than one, leaving apart a strong agreement before the event itself!

Here another example of well anrrated RP event

3.2) PVE ROLEPLAY Image

PVE RP is much easier to do than RVR one. First of all all enemy mobs are acting in the same way more or less, leaveing little room to improvvisation on their skillset. Secondly, in PVE hardly you will meet a mob that act differently from his comrades (with exception of dungeons etc but thats another story!).

So concerning a RPPVE you must:
1)Take agreement with guild master/RP event master
2) Be lore wise in the PVE event (hardly a company of dwarfs will be found in Ulthuan battling dark elves unelss something very bad happen!) so you must keep in mind WHY the event take place.
3) All partecipants can wear/act as they like, but remaining in the BASIC RP RULES (no frogjump etc...)
4)No skills are forbidden, yet you are encouraged to make them more realistic while using em. (for example, remember my tooth of tzeentch macro! hardly during a battle all his members remain shut... unless ure a phoenix guard.... but that class is not available yet you know...)
5)Avoid being naked for the event... even int the future, when other tiers will be opened , avoid bringing level 1 players naked... thats a bad taste.... and can ruin event...
6) In case RP is carried out IN RAID context, all partecipants must have a reason to do so. (Were not telling to make a raid of high elfs only, but at least justify why the goddam dwarf is came to ulthuan or why the inquisitor is in Kharaz a Karak!)

That said you must prepare and brief the people concerning the event you are carring out.

When INSIDE the instance or raid, battle the enemy as you would do against another player, use the macroes and , before engaging a boss battle, you could prepare a warcray or tell something to your men to bolster their morale!

After that a boss when attacked will pronounce some words, use them to answer and spit in his face you hatred! Dont focus too much on "omg i must dps higher than all rofl!!!XDD!!!11!" but INSTEAD focus on "Let's make this entertaining!"

I will try to add as soon as i can a video for RPPVE , i am working on that atm, so please be patient! :D

4)The Rule of 4 "W"
To help you organize RP events use this simple rule which consists of 4 simple questions
1)Where?
2)When?
3)Why?
4)What?

These questions help you assets the idea which circulate around your event.
For example, i decide to create my personal event and post on forum (PVE WISE)

1)Where?
Sorcerer's Axiom camp
2)When?
Tomorrow at 16:00 server time
3)Why?
Because some imperial militia is resisting to the advance of chaos and Wulfric asked our intervention! The resulting battle will favor us in the eyes of our gods!
4)What?
Pve battlecamp. Attack and clear all area, after a Zealot must make a unholy ritual in the middle of the camp to invoke the Chaos Gods favour and claim the ground in their name!

See? this is somethin very basic but it can be done with ANY event. Especially for beginners this will help yo a lot! nothing is more satisfying than having a event going as you planned and that makes a lot of peoples involved and having fun!

5)CONCLUSION

I hope this basic guide helped you guys in commencing spread roleplay events to this server! If in doubt or any comment, reply here, contact me in game or send me pm, i will answer you ASAP!

Thanks in particular to:
1) Blood Legion, for creating roleplay here
2)Sarrien, his gm
3)Warhammer ROR staff, for bringing back such epic game!
4)Whoever will contribute to the growth of RP HERE!!!!

Now what are you waiting for? The gods are calling you! ill you answer?

6) LAST NOTES (VERY IMPORTANT) OF RPRVR/PVE

Here i will post WHAT U MUST NEVER DO IN RVRRP OR PVERP (i would have done in my other topic but it was too long!) Image

Don’t assume relationships.
One of the worst problems I’ve seen in roleplay is when someone joins a roleplay and having never roleplayed with anyone there before, starts claiming relationships that have never happened. Claiming things like a canon character has been in love with you since day one, when the person playing the character has never seen you? That’s a terrible idea, especially with Original Characters. You are not the long lost sibling of a canon character who has for all intents and purposes been described as an only child. You were not raised by the canon character, and you were not their second cousin twice removed, nor their ex-lover unless they specifically talk with you about it and say yes.

It’s annoying to deal with, and it makes people pretty uncomfortable. It’s a bad idea in general to not work out things like this before a roleplay, or checking with people to see how they feel about it. Would you walk up to a stranger and tell them that you are now married with kids? No! That’s stupid!

Don’t force Roleplay styles on others.
If someone has stated in OOC or otherwise that they aren’t comfortable roleplaying with someone who, for instance, uses stars for actions instead of novel style, or first person roleplaying styles then DON’T try to sneak it past them. They have a reason for it, they don’t want to roleplay with that kind of roleplayer, and trying to force it on them against their will is completely rude. Lo and behold, people roleplay for fun and since it’s for fun they have preferences which they enjoy more than others. It’s the difference between touch and tackle football. Some people like one more than the other and having to do/deal with the other ruins the fun for them.

If you just simply cannot live without roleplaying with them, you are the guest in their house asking permission for RP! You should change what you do to suit what they want so you can get what you want in return. It’s all about compromise to get to a place where you can both enjoy yourself. If you simply can’t change what you do, then you two are better off not roleplaying together. Respect their wishes, and leave them alone. It’s not the end of the world if one person doesn’t RP with you.

The person asking for roleplay should be the one to compromise. You’re asking someone else to take time away from what they are doing to do something you want. If they do something you dislike, you should tolerate it for the session, and make a note not to do it again. It’s your fault for asking, reap what you sow unless you can ask in a nice manner if they maybe possibly wouldn’t mind kind of not doing something maybe? Roleplayers won’t kill you, but if they say no, drop it and enjoy what you get.

Don’t flirt with/:| non-smut-characters to extreme extents.
If a character has been made for a fighting or other serious roleplay and doesn’t seem to have any mention of sexual promise on their profile, do not use a character to try and get laid by them. If your character is just there for sex, in a roleplay created for the plot, you don’t belong. Don’t push it, there’s plenty of places online to get your rocks off, you don’t need to ruin the roleplay of those who enjoy romantic, subtle, and serious roleplay over cybering.

It’s not a bad thing to want to have sex online, it is a bad thing to try and push it on people who don’t seem to want it. Stick to sex-based chats. Stick to people with sexual profiles. If a character politely turns you down, or doesn’t show interest at all, or even seems to avoid your character, don’t continue. Let them be, let them have what they want. There are plenty of fish in the sea, and messing with people will just earn you a reputation as someone to avoid.

The biggest tip off is, if a character has an OOC section that says “no smut”, then you should seriously **** off. What’s wrong with you? People have limits, respect them or you’re a callous moronic fool. This is why it’s smart to read the OOC section, because if you don’t you’re going to get reamed by angry roleplayers, and not in the way you wanted.

When you have a character who is a constant flirt, you can drive off roleplay when someone is uncomfortable with this. Look at how your actions reflect on you, look at how the mun behind the character reacts. It’s all well and good if you have a right because “canon says so” but if you’re making the people behind the characters leery, avoidant, and sometimes outright hostile then you’re clearly going too far. People have a right to say no, or that they aren’t comfortable, and if you keep trying to make the roleplay all about sex when in a public area where they can’t escape you, or when they keep having their serious RP devolve because of you into yet another orgy/flirting session where they are clearly uncomfortable, they will likely leave. The point of roleplay is to have roleplaying partners, and if you scare everyone off no matter how “right” you are, you’re kind of **** for anything but one-player mode.

Learn to spell and use proper grammar.
You are how you appear in your writing; people look for roleplayers who can spell well, and write sentences that make sense to a reader. You don’t have to be the best at either, but if your post looks like someone a teenager would text her boyfriend in class you aren’t playing up to snuff for a lot of people.

Different people have different levels of what is acceptable, some people won’t roleplay with you if you have any typos whatsoever. In fact they will correct you constantly, and then get frustrated and leave. These people are pretty elitist, you’d best leave them to each other. Some people are semi-literate or something to the effect of the term (although it has suffered heavy degradation through overuse). These people can handle a few typos, and are generally more casual about writing. They aren’t completely insufferable, but they do like it when someone can write well enough to get things across. They’re generally more friendly to creative phrasing.

It keeps going down from there, just find a group who types like you do, and figure out what you’re comfortable with. If people complain, do better, if you can’t do better, play somewhere else and let them have their fun without flinching every time you make a post. Remember to reread your post real quick, even a quick skim, and hit major typos with the nice red wriggly line of correction.

The one time you can ignore these things is when you are typing for a character who does it in character. Small accent changes, like missing g’s replaced with apostrophe’s and stuff like that. No one will complain about a little bit of quirkiness, but don’t overplay your hand. Be readable, there is nothing worse than trying to roleplay with someone who says “*i wlkd inta teh bsuilin.8” seriously.

Don’t walk off/leave on a roleplay.
If a roleplay scares you maybe you can suddenly log off, block them, and run. But unless it’s so terribad it’s actually causing you to break out in hives and your eyes to boil, show a little respect for your roleplaying partner and at least say “Gotta go bye!”

If it’s a long term roleplay, tell them you’ve left. It sucks to be stuck in a scene only to find out that the character you’re waiting on has left the entire site and gone on a 8 year hiatus. Get your character out of the way, tell them you’re leaving, and don’t leave them hanging. It hurts, it makes people feel like **** when their partner just up and leaves without a word. You ask “What did I do wrong?” or “Why’d they go?” Sometimes it breeds anger and resentment. You don’t want a good roleplayer you want to talk to again to hate you for forgetting to say bye in a big old painfully serious mid-climax RP, or for someone to complain to their friends only to spread the rumor that you’re a bad roleplayer. A simple “GTG Bye!” will suffice in most cases. It’s better than staying online for 4 hours hoping for another post that will never come.

Of course if your internet cuts out what can you do? Just apologize when you get back. Keep things smoothed over with good manners.

Keep the IRL Drama out of RP.
There are people out there who have screwed you over, people who you have dated, or been angry with. These people might roleplay with you, but unless you have a problem with how they roleplay, or with something else that directly effects roleplay, either shut up and deal, or walk away.

Do not make your character hate them for no reason, don’t attack them, don’t try to stop them from playing with other people or cause issues because of it. Just stop and breathe. If you can’t handle it leave. Don’t spread gossip, don’t start rumors, don’t be a ****. Things happened, and if you **** up the good time other people are having because of it, then you’re a **** too.

Don’t reply to an extremely long post without effort.
Unless you’ve agreed beforehand that you understand that your roleplaying partner isn’t that great at longer posts; having a roleplay with someone where you’ve posted evenly large things back and forth and then suddenly getting a single line out of no where is pretty rude. Especially with no explanation.

There’s always room for an OH NO my kid just ate an entire box of rat poison, and oh shoot I have to shower before school, but try not to spring it on people too often. Someone who regularly just doesn’t have it in them to post a good healthy amount tends to make a larger poster lose interest, almost as if they sense that you aren’t really into it. Especially true when the roleplayer suddenly posting less has proven in the past to be robustly worded when interested. It makes you seem a bit distracted and uncomfortable, and can kill a roleplay. It’s not a serious sin, unless you do it to the point that it makes the other player frustrated with you.

Don’t be a Mary Sue. Don’t be a Godmodder.
For the love of all the things you have ever loved, please for the sake of those close to you, do not roleplay a Mary Sue. This is a simple rule okay, it hurts, it literally burns a good roleplayer to have to deal with a Mary Sue. You are not perfect, wonderful, not everyone likes you, and not everyone who doesn’t are enemies. Here’s a link to a more in depth post about Mary Sues and how to not be one.

For the blah blah, love, generally the same mess as above, please don’t play a Godmodder. It’s generally just as bad as a Mary Sue. There are people who will outright tell you you are one and walk away from a roleplay. Some of these people don’t know what they’re talking about, but if a competent roleplayer complains take it to heart. You need to not do this, it is the biggest pestilence that anyone in any roleplay has to deal with and it really really sucks. Find out more about Godmodding and Godmodder styles on the article about The Anti-Munch Project which is devoted to ending this viral disease. (I’m being dramatic, it’s fun, try it.)

Don’t play your characters waaay OOCly.
There is some lenience for head-canon, AU’s, and some for situations that change how your character acts, but if you are playing a character too different from the norm, doing things no one could imagine, you are a bad roleplayer. There’s just no other way to say it. If your character is depicted in series (or in your canon) as a calm peaceful shy retiring sort, playing them a flamboyant oversexualized friendly type who assaults everyone for attention is not going to go down well.

I’m thinking of say, playing Thor as much shorter than usual and chubby and cute, wearing soft delicate dresses, disliking beer fighting and armor, and hiding behind people with a stutter begging them not to be loud because it’s scary and then claiming you’re trying to RP them as canonly as possible. You think that’s stupid? I’ve had it happen to me, someone literally claimed they were in character with something this far off and I know I sound like I'm exaggerating but Heavens to Betsy I couldn’t tell you how much this made me uncomfortable with them and never want to RP with them again. They clearly had no knowledge of their character, no basis behind the changes, and were outright ignoring canon to be a little **** to other Roleplayers.

If a character is changing due to actions in RP or backstory, keep their basic personality, and adapt, but never, and I mean never, ever make a character so different as to be unrecognizable. (See: My Immortal for a good reference here.) You will find people who have a tolerance for some changes, here and there, but to completely warp a character you’ll need serious back-story and explanations or you can just get a new character to do what you want with them. You will find people who tolerate a character played so badly that it gives them a bad name, these are bad roleplayers, keep looking for a community who has some taste. I may sound rude, but more often than not groups who allow this are also havens for God-mods, and hidden-smut RPers who will ruin a roleplay for you sooner or later by coming out of the woodwork and simply making things terrible. If you like this sort of business, by all means enjoy yourself, just don’t expect it to be accepted elsewhere.

Show respect to fellow roleplayers.
For one thing, showing your fellow roleplayers respect can mean the difference between friends, and a room full of enemies. Do not judge people without at least talking to them a little. Everyone thinks their character is the best, the strongest and the one who owns everyone. Consider everyone your equal, or be willing to accept others as better than you, and a whole new world opens up. A lot more people are going to respect you for when you show your prowess with simple roleplaying, instead of trying to bluff your way around saying you are the best of everything.

One of the big things I see are people who roleplay women being immediately down-classed to “not as good” at fighting. This is why more and more women are playing males; to avoid this kind of annoying stuff. Yeah I know, it seems like another GIRL POWER rant, but people will honestly take well written roleplay posts and disregard them if they realize they are played by a female. I have taken to only playing male characters to avoid this, because I just can’t fight against the stereotypes any longer. If you can find someone who doesn’t reject your fighting posts, or casually handwave their way past them despite playing a female character, you have found a diamond in the rough. Thank them.

OOC bubbles are a topic that comes up often, and some people don’t do them and that’s fine, but I’d like to take a look at the ideas behind them. When you separate your aimless chatter from roleplay by some sign, you’re showing respect to other roleplayers. It’s like giving someone the right of way, and showing them you see their posts as legitimate. You are pulling yourself out of the way of a roleplay to let the roleplayers enjoy themselves without worrying if what you say was supposed to be a roleplay post or not.

It also helps keep a roleplay going; if you keep shouting over top of someone trying to make a speech they might become angry or stop. (Your bubbles are a step out of the way shows them you’re trying to whisper a good idea while allowing others to enjoy their roleplay. You’ve gotten out of their way, and they can easier ignore the posts.) This seems silly to think of people performing better because of a couple parenthesis, but just showing them the respect of not getting in the way of roleplay is an amazing confidence boost that makes roleplay seem more legitimate for roleplayers who may be a little more shy, or self-conscious.

Pay attention to what is said, and “listen” to the mood of the room. It’s not just text on the screen, roleplay has moods. If the roleplay has become serious, or is serious, do not jump in with random joking jokes. Don’t keep laughingly chatting it up, especially with the characters involved, if the mood of their roleplay is serious. It’s rude as hell to be discussing your character’s painful self-awareness of death and have someone joking grab their shoulders and yell “OMG MONKEYS!” It is rude, obnoxious, and will give you a bad name among your roleplaying group. Keep your big yap shut when serious RP starts up, or head for the door.

Also, don’t let OOC flood out roleplay, if they are slow posters and you’ve managed 2 pages of OOC between posts, it may be time to take it elsewhere. Depends on the roleplayer, a few posts are okay, but if you make their roleplay disappear under the bullshit you aren’t being very mannerly.

Possibly a personal thing on this last one: Don’t bug me when I’m roleplaying. If I’m roleplaying, keep your OOC questions to bubbles or I feel like I’m replying to you in character and it’s just rude. Stop bugging me, I’m roleplaying, and you are watching this RP so why haven’t you noticed this yet? This is terribly rude so I’ll mention it even if I’m not sure it’s a widespread thing.

Don’t try to change how someone else RP’s a character due to personal preference only.
Okay, you see a character, they have something they like to do and your headcanon says otherwise. If it’s headcanon, leave it alone. Do not try to force a character you SWEAR is gay in your headcanon to play their character gay, when they have had no evidence towards it in canon strong enough to enforce the facts. If someone was in canon 100% undeniably a user of swords and despised guns; then the person playing them with a gun is wrong (This is debatable however, backstory solves so much, but if you can’t deal with it don’t RP with them). If you just prefer thinking of them with guns, leave off.

Asking them is one thing, it’s fine to ask them if they wouldn’t pretty please do something you’d like more, but if they say no; you drop that idea like it’s a hot potato. You might debate it depending on the person, but if you try to force it on them by roleplaying it against their will you are an asshole my dear.

If they roleplay a character as having blue eyes, and you want them to be red, and you roleplay “She looked into his red eyes!” when he has clearly stated blue in previous posts, you are being an asshat and need to back down. Do not roleplay things contradictory to what a character wants or suggested in roleplay simply to fill your own headcanon slots. Do not enforce your headcanons on others through roleplay, by saying things like they were being “obviously upset” when a character has stated they were “cool as a cucumber.”

One thing to keep in mind, roleplay with people you know is going to be different than public, stranger fueled, RP. With some people you can just unthinkably bend or break these ideas, with an unspoken agreement. If you have this kind of relationship with a roleplayer, good on ya, you probably deserve it. Be aware you might catch some heat off others, but don’t let it shake you from a nice comfortable relationship with someone. Be happy you can have what you have. ♥

Other extenuated situations, such as a roleplay literally modified to be made for a group of Mary Sues played well, or a roleplay that demands you do one of the above sins, are of course reasons to break the ‘rules’ so to speak. Sometimes these can be a ton of fun, and remember these are just general “sins”. I’m not trying to rule your life, just give you an idea of things that cause widespread agony amongst roleplayers.

As always, once you know the rules well, you can break the rules safely. Backstory, explanations, details, and extremely well done roleplaying can safely destroy all these rules and still create a likable character and a great roleplayer. If you have to ask whether you’re one of them; you are not in fact one of them.

Hope it helped and sorry for text wall but it is needed!!! <3

This is a brilliant guide. I've come across many of the issues you mention, and you cover pretty much all of them!

Certainly my biggest annoyance are occassions when folks enter the RP world because they confuse it with cyber opportunities. Especially if you're an IRL female, playing say, a sorceress or witch elf. I found to protect myself, I'll roll male characters in environments where there is a higher risk of this, so interesting to see you've picked up on this sort of thing as it's reassuring that it's not just me that has experienced this. It can really put you off logging on to your game if whenever you go online, someone immediately pushes for a lengthy RP session that then starts to get weird!

Thanks so much for this guide, I am certain that it is proving really helpful to those interested in RP on RoR. :)
