not really sure what a good gear set up looks like. i found a post that talked about 4p Beast lord 2p Dom 2p Merc not sure if thats good does not seem bad but it was an old post and im newb.

as a fresh 40, 4 pc BL, 2 merc and 3 pc domi is ridicul;ously quick to get into and gives you some alright stats

Beastlord should be your priority, you will use that forever. Ring+back+trinket, where trinket needs all other pieces to get. Check AH for gloves and boots (merc and most other low level sets), they are Bind on Equip (boe). Shouldn't be more than 3-5g each piece. Socket Strength to at least 950, then WS. GL & WAAAAAGH

what would the best melee weapons be ?

Subjugator is fine while you work on your endgame weapons ( sc + pve )
