I'm wondering what talismans I should slot for my salvation spec WP. I get mixed information most of the time.
Some people say to go just put armor talismans into everything because having willpower over 800 isn't worth it, others say that willpower is alright. How much willpower should I be going for? Is 800 really all I need?

Ask yourself how much armor is left after getting hit by a e.g. marauder armor debuff.

Full armor talismans, 3pc winds impervious, beastlord cloak for that extra armor talli. Don't even think about your willpower when gearing, it doesn't really matter.

But why doesn't willpower matter? Why is it different than strength on a WH, or ballistic skill on a SW? Help me understand what mechanics or the reasoning behind it.

When leveling a new char I go with willpower talismans, because those are always cheap to get. When getting my final setup I make gold to buy the more expensive armor talismans.
Using willpower talis at the beginning learns you positioning as a side effect, because you are so squishy and melt, when nobody helps you quickly.

I'm already 40, so I should just put armor talismans everywhere.
Also, this may be a bit of a sidestep from the original topic, but should I make up for the lost willpower with renown training?
I'm currently using my renown points on Futile Blows until my chance to be crit is as close to 0% without going over it, then putting it into heal crit, and the leftover into willpower and/or dodge/disrupt.

Better not. Use the willpower tactic if you lack willpower.

So what should I be going for with renown points?

you already wrote your renown points distribution. I think it is ok. futile strikes, disrupt and heal crit are good choices.
