Best single piece of advice I can give is; make friends, the game is meant to be played with other like-minded people.

Oh and don't get discouraged, the game is a bit difficult to get into compared to the new generation MMOs. Return of Reckoning also has some specific changes that won't show up in the client unless you type in .ab changelist

Don't be afraid of asking questions. Use the advice channel /advice, guild chat, send tells to people around you or use the forums/discord/IRC. Most people are very friendly and will be glad to help.
