ESC -> User Settings -> Chat tab -> Scroll Limit to 8000

it's default value is 500
in thick of battle important messages gone missing due to scroll limit

make new tabs for your need
seperate off-topic, general etc from group, warband by using filter

I would additionally suggest turning on timestamps, they help to give a frame of reference as to when stuff actually happened (as opposed to when you think they happened - your sense of time can get all wonky when you are engrossed in combat).

Edit: Kinda like Luuca's sense of time is, necroing old threads.
