Melee Channels + "Animation Cancelling"

Hey y'all.
So as you know, most melee channels other than BO/SM's and the Lifetaps of WP and DoK are considered garbage and a waste of talent points. This is because, while they generally have slightly higher tooltip dps than two instant abilities combined, the loss of basic attacks tends to nullify that dps increase - if not outright overriding it.
However, I've been thinking. 2-handed weapons tend to have very low attack speed, a lot of them actually taking more time to swing than 3 seconds per attack.
So would it technically be viable to use Melee Channels, as long as one initiates them right after hitting a basic attack?
I guess it mainly depends on how the basic attack chain resets after the Channel has ended - has anyone any information on this?
