Server closing connection - VPN questions

Hey all. I've been getting the Server Has Closed Connection problem, all solutions say use a VPN. I've been using the free trial version of Hotspot Shield connecting from the US (I live in Canada) but then the character login screen never loads. What's my goal? Is there a specific country I'm trying to mask myself as?
