You do get Shades of death if you get the right set. You don't get impending doom mainly because you don't have enough renown points for it. You can choose to get impending doom over HoR but HoR does more damage overall and gives you more options than impending doom which only hits once where as HoR can tick 3 times and able to proc Shades of Death and your Frost Touch procs.

Lastly why swell of gloom? Isn't it dangerous for squishy sorc? Espically without a dedicated healer?

I've never had problem with the backlash... the backlash already has a high chance to go off with or without the tactic so you won't see survivability problems from the norm but what you will see is a huge increase of spiked damage due to double Gloomburst which individually have a chance to proc Frozen touch so you can have two Frozen touch procs off one gloomburst. It's also nice to use to finish off targets sometimes as it only has a 5s cooldown and hits 2 times.

- 1 Impending Doom deals more damage in 1 GCD, then all of your SoD procs and SoG additional taken together.
- 1 ID builds 40! DM
- SoG deals twice more damage to you, then to your opponent
- SoD animation going realy bad.

I'd think about it.

i once more have to completely disagree with your advice and i highly recommend to not use this spec.

taking Shades of Death over Impending Doom sounds like a bad troll to me, sorry. By just looking at the tooltip alone it should be clear why you would never use SoD over ID:
SoD 100 additional damage on DIRECT damage e.g. Arctic Blast, Gloomburst and HoR in your rotation. That results in 300 total damage per timestamp during the burst.
ID: 341 direct spirit damage.

afaik SoD should not be able to crit since it's a proc like WB.

to sum it up: you will lack one spell for your complete rotation, you will have less overall burst and you will have less damage on move which is super important by taking SoD over ID.

Why Shade of Doom is terrible?
1)It don't scale with your int
2)It don't crt
3)It did however get migrated by spirit resistance
4)So in total, you will get about 5x120x0.6=360dmg if you have 5 hit landed.
5)To be honest, your staff auto attack hit almost the same dmg, 2x as hard if you crt.
6)It cost GCD and AP
It is noted however Shade of Doom is very very useful for stealing KB from other dps since it proc off their killing dmg and give the KB to you.
That why it give a illusion it can kill....Fact is :IT DON'T

Why Swell of Gloom is bad?
1)It don't crt
2) It do scale with int however but also migrated by toughness
3)It also get migrated by spirit resistance
4) So in T4 (assuming 900int against toughness 238(squishy, max resis)), you will hit approx 438x0.6=262.8dmg
5)However THE MAIN 3 REASONS IT IS BAD (i) IS You get hit for 750dmg for that....
6)YOU NEED A TACTIC SLOT
7)YOU NEED extra 4 SPEC PT TO SPEC FOR IT.

Why Echo of power?(It is not a must have, you can leave it and spec other things.)
