Can't press any buttons after client launches

Hey guys,
I just installed the game, logged in - everything was working well.
As soon as I passed handshaking, and I was put on the create a character menu. I can't seem to go back or create a character, or select any of the buttons in the UI at the bottom of the screen, as when I mouse over the buttons they do not highlight. It seems as if the mouse isn't corresponding with the UI, and is highlighting elements lower down in the UI rather than highlighting elements i'm mousing over. This is making it impossible to go into settings, go back, create a character or join game - as all of these options are on the bottom of the UI. My screen resolution is maxed at 1680x1050, and i've attempted to start the game in 1366x768, restarting the computer, setting the files to not read only, and running the game in compatibility mode, nothing has fixed the problem as of yet. Is there any way to change the games resolution/fullscreen option without going into the game? Any other advice would be highly appreciated.
