It's a microcosm of Human nature. Compassion and empathy are not survival traits and are contrary to instinct.

There is a reason all moral and ethical codes of behaviour that include multiple social/cultural groups have to be enforced by a code of laws supported by a system of punishment.

Any study of Human history and society is a descent into the abyss and that abyss pierces into your soul.

That's wrong. Compassion and empathy are actually a benefit and increase the chances of survival. We evolved to be compassionate.

"Compassion <...> enhances the welfare of vulnerable offspring, because it is a desirable emotion or attribute in mate selection processes, and because it enables cooperative relations with non-kin."

Only in the context of the immediate family group. History has shown compassion to be a liability in conflicts with other social groups.
