I just hope that being DDoS's does not become a common thing around now. The last week or so has been a gigantic mess.

How does it decide who is a legit player? All IPs that connect to the server are neutral at the beginning. Before the login process even starts the packets need to be rooted to the login server.
There are complex processes running (semi-) automatically in a network to make all the "easy-one-klick" connections happen. A DDoS attacks targets these core IP traffic procedures, not any specific login procedures varying from server to server.
