Make recoil to hit harder? Make it % of bw'sorc hp instead of fixed number?
Prob still wouldn't be enough to justify venting out heat... A few good healers in wb and you won't notice even 50% hp backlashes. But why not to try and see how it works?

A change to only the risk portion of the mechanic, if it stays the same (chance to damage self on cast) will mostly just effect casual/new players. Like you say yourself here healing makes it moot, unless you ramped it up to retarded levels which just isn't fair given the BW has been balanced around being at 100 combustion with the same drawback for years.

I can elaborate a bit more on what I meant by wasted potential in the OP,

The mechanic should first and foremost be something were there is a clear division between a good and a bad player in terms of how they are able to manage it, and what they are getting out of it. Right now we all know that you want to be at 91%+ combustion and there is really no reason to be any lower because we lose over half of our damage potential, the devs on live balanced the class around being at 100% combustion so there is no such thing as managing your mechanic or playing BW at anything less.

Combustion needs to have both a greater risk AND reward than it does now in order for it to have that skill division. This means players should be allowed to scale their combustion into higher levels, or such higher levels that they risk portion becomes such a detriment to their ability to survive that they have to manage their combustion or die. This also means the risk portion would probably have to be something other than just self damage, and it also means the BW needs a non intrusive way to manage their mechanic (think something like scorched earth's 20 combustion loss with no damage or GCD on a short CD). If healing is the cause for the mechanics risk of becoming a non factor, than add a scaling self healdebuff after a certain point.

You cannot nerf the current mechanics backlash damage, or add some new modifier in without also adjusting the reward portion to also be greater in comparison.

BW's and sorcs already have much more reward than they deserve. I mean... come on, just look what lengths other dps classes go in order to achieve +1% crit chance and how +10% crit chance makes a whole world of difference for them.
And there we have sorcs/bws who get more base crit chance than any other dps class will ever ahieve on any tier and +100% crit stength on top of it.

They are fine as they are it will balance out in T4 anyway, Bw and Sorc have always been at its strongest in T3.
T4 its all Melee train that rules the dps game.

They were... not fine but more like "acceptable" on t4 because of Trivial Blows. If we won't have Trivial Blows in the game,
maybe just reduce sorc/bw additional crit damage at 100 heat by 50%?
