In theory I think I would to add something like this if it was possible as it might just help the melee healer in some small way, apart from being in my opinion at least a bit of fun twist. Also something similar worked for Rift quite well at one point (thanks for reminding me of the many many fun hours I played the Cleric as a healer / offtank Wargrim

I think I would have the item work as a proper shield item with blocking. Maybe call it a holy shield or small shield, have it lower heal spell abilties by 25% (as a rough figure). However, give a small bonus to blocking as well depending on rarity of the shield and give off a small group heal out from the WP to about 30 metres when blocking (again rough figure). Something like this would be a nice synergy with what's present and any changes forthcoming.
Before I get called Order biased and not thinking of Destro in my theorycrafting (:D). DoK could have something similar to that of an item called a parry item that was used in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (could call it an Ornate Dagger as an example). An off hand weapon that did no damage but increased parry, as you can probably guess where my train of thought is going, you could match the WP idea but with working off parry instead. Of course numbers might need to be played with seeing as getting parry is easier for both WP / DoK.
I appreciate the chances of anything like this is slim to none, but hey, its great to theorycraft about such things and share with others, right?

You don't get much defence from just using a shield. Most of block chance comes from the % bonuses from gear and abilities. So to make it useful, you'd have to add these things along with the shield.
