I had a t4 magus. Only classes that would survive solo vs me were def healers, rr100 dps WPs, and kiting AMs which would also drain all my AP. Quite a lot of times I took on 2-3 players, and killed them.

Magus wasn't underpowered, just not a team class.

Good to hear, because my experience from the beggining of the game was much different (and from what I've read back in the day, it wasn't me who sucked, but the whole class), and I really like this class :)

I had the same Magus experience. It was my first class back at release. I think I made it to 18 or 19 before I gave up.
Right after I found this server I was re-acclimating myself to what I had missed the last 2 years of WAR and found this video

Sunder: ok, a tank aggro move
Precision Strike: ok, a high damaging attack with pen
Blazing Blade: unlike fervour, it is ok. Why? Because it is on a tank!
Crippling Strike: ok, an attack with utility
Vicious Slash: ok, but it'd be nice if it did something extra if it interrupts
Throw: meh
Hold the Line: nice utility
Shield Rush: a tank defensive move, ok
Guard/Taunt: ok
Knights were tanks? Could have fooled me, I had no idea and I played one as a main.

You just had to play it right- as a tank mage.

On my magus by t4 I had 3.8 k or so armor, 800 sh toughness, orange resists, and full Trivial Blows (more toughness and resists then my BG actually). In addition, I used the racial Warped Flesh tactic, which gives a very nice absorb every 3 sec, and Aegis of Orange Fire ability which would buff my wounds by 230 or so and heal for buffed amount (in other words, 2300 heal on 60 sec CD).

I had less intel/magic power then all out dps magus of cause, but since I could tank better then quite a few tanks I could afford using Close Quarters tactic (one that reduces cast time to 50% when within 20 feet of the target). My usual tactic was casting all dots while getting close, then using all the heavy long cast Havoc nukes with 50% cast time while I'm in melee range.

Worked very nicely. Especially since most order thought along the lines of "Magus! Lets get into melee!". At least the first time, after some encounters I had quite a few who would see me, and just run.

Nice ambusher classes many got seriously disappointed though when they played them as if SORC/BW. Suffers in group play since they are so dot reliant and lacks real bursting capabilities.
A reasonable RvR system that could make the majority happy http://imgur.com/HL6cgl7

I really can't remember how I used to play Magus, since it was about 6 years ago , but it will be fun figuring it out once again. And all you saying that it was better later, than in the beggining and that there is hope for it is reassuring for me :)

Go for it, and just remember, toughness (and AP pots, especially at low lvls) is your best friend as magus. As in, toughness>intelligence, in every spot. Works very fine at low lvls as well.

Thanks. I'll guess I'll figure it all out by myself, since I won't need much toughness when I'm questing or doing dungeons with friend, and probably while leveling (when the game is finished, not right now, when we have level caps) I'll just stick to what best I can find. But I'll bear that in mind :)
Just hope that there is more that just one good build for any class :)

unfortunately, the current state Magus feels about as effective as 2008 magus. Got mine to 10 but am going to wait for more updates/tiers
