Oh wow - I didn't know this part of it. Thanks for sharing!chaoscode wrote:Here is a good article on what happened in 2010. This server here was where all my developers went. The story is amazing and one day I should write a book on everything that happened with mmorpg4free.

-is quite different geni, wow is a living game that make still tons of moneyGenisaurus wrote:Nolstarius was breaking the exact same laws before they started accepting money, as they were after. -war is not a live game.
-everything is not EA property but gw according to their ip contract.
-there isn't other games with the old ip of fantasy going on appart total war which is a buy to play game which is not in competition with ror that is a mmorpg
-ror dev not takign money.
- is all property of blizzard which have the right to protect his ip, the same cannot be said for war at 100%, i don't know what was the contract betwen gw/ea for the use of ip but knowing how much gw is strich i think it all depend from gw when and if there will be a judgment.
And having been fantasy killed and replace with AoS there should be even less problem by gw i hope.
-there are no other mmorpg by gw/ea which are in competition on the same stuff -->rvr (daoc is an exeption really base differently than war and anyway it have his own consolidated playerbase which at cost to no let it die thay are still paying the bill).

*coughs* WoW's EULA *coughs*
As for the situation itself it caused really negative PR for Blizzard, but if you look at it from the fair perspective they are just trying to defend their product that is still alive and is still a source of income (even though it is drying pretty fast).
I am only amazed Blizzard keeps refusing to create vanilla or tbc realms with the original skills/talents etc., but that is their product and they do decide what to do with it even if the players don't like it. That petition is garbage, the only way you can show your support for Nostalrius is boycott Blizzard canceling your WoW subscription, if you have one, or stop buying their products.
And last thing: it's not Blizzard anymore, it's Activision.

This is the first thing from EULA that you have to accept when you install WoW. This means that not only Nostalrius' devs broke the law but all the users as well.Subject to your agreement to and continuing compliance with the Blizzard Agreements, you may use the Service solely for your own non-commercial entertainment purposes by accessing it with an authorized, unmodified Game Client. You may not use the Service for any other purpose, or in connection with any other software.

Correct: Happy costumers = $$$vove wrote: $$$$$ > your happiness
This is why the game has been generally hemorrhaging subs for over 6 years. People aren't happy with the product anymore. Stuff is too easy and too quick, and people get bored, so they stop playing.
Many people just want the old product back, and they are even willing to pay money for it. The fact that Blizzard still haven't tapped into this goldmine, is a big mystery to me. The next expansion is gonna flop, exactly like Cata, MoP and WoD. They do nothing special or new in this expansion to try and revive the franchise. Lore or new classes ain't gonna cut it.
People have been talking about WoW's "death" for so many years, that its practically a cliche at this point. But the fact of the matter is, if they keep this trend up - It's just a matter of few years before it's a reality. F2P might not be far off.
Clips like this one also shows just how arrogant Blizzard has become:

Re: Nostalrius (Private WoW Server) Shutting Down
I think ALOT people played on the server coz it was free.
If Blizzard made a Legacy server with subscription, even with discounted price something like 5$.
I doubt it would get the same amount of players as this server.
But thats just my guess...

I mean what a douche, he knows best what people like/want? I mean, it seems in his opinion players are clueless idiots- that image of players they have would be correct as the content they prepare seems to be tailored towards less brilliant ones

Re: Nostalrius (Private WoW Server) Shutting Down
just curious: the ror website shows advertisement, so is this kind of income ok?
I really dont have any clue about it, so im asking here.
And if its fine, why dont you show more ads on the site?

Making money off people that visit your website can not really be tied back to the trademark.
Re: Nostalrius (Private WoW Server) Shutting Down
I don't think that's the case at all. People loved to pay for vanilla back in the day, and I don't know about you, but I would, in a heartbeat, sub to such a server for the same price as retail. Hell, I would even pay MORE.roadkillrobin wrote:I think ALOT people played on the server coz it was free.

I think the whole "They only play because it's free" is a pretty condescending argument. You're basically saying people who play on such private servers are cheap. Not taking into consideration that what the private server offers, can't be bought anywhere, anymore.
Seems kinda weird to me actually, now that I think of it. Is that exactly what RoR is, too? Don't you play here yourself? If Mythic game back from the dead, and said "Hey, we are re-opening WAR, and taking it back to the state prior to the RvR-expansion!". Wouldn't you pay for that? Are you only playing RoR because it's free?
