that was mostly because their damage was negated so heavily be armor and guard.
Where as caster DPS was only cut by 50%(ish) + guard + detaunt. physical dps is cut by 75% + guard + detaunt
And free uber crit damage

many many interesting and insightful suggestions in this thread, thanks.
As you guys have pointed out, many more things should be improved to make melee WPs viable. Agree, I reconsider my point: SR alone can't solve the problem.
Landaren is really spot on in his comparison between magical DPS and melee DPS (I'm assuming he's referring to AMs and shammies as opposed to WPs and DoKs, maybe I'm mistaken).
In my opinion, it is extremely unfair and imbalanced to have DPS AMs deal much more damage without having to risk anything while DPS WPs have a hard time fighting armor stacking and heavy melee CC.

what do u want to have
valid dps build or
valid melee heal build
cos am/shamans could dish okish dps but they cant bring reliable dps healing
at one time you could be healer or dps but not both at same time. Noone could balance that, so stop dream about legit melee healing, that is impossible. You just cant have all at one time, it is so obvious

Yeah, Landaren has a point here. If you wanted to run a melee healer, you have to deal with consequences of their damage being mitigated heavily, inability to hit a target, cc, etc.
I think a good way to fix it would involve removing the heal delving from the damage dealt itself on things like Divine Assault, Guilty Soul and Sigmar's Radiance so Guard and Detaunt don't effectively halve your healing output.

the biggest pain is having your attacks blocked/parried and getting 0 return for your swing.
If it's live or die for your team and all you can hit are the 4 tanks spamming snare on you with shields 75% armor and 50% chance to block/parry
