So tactics stacked which made that zealot armor buff tactic hugely OP. Potions actually didnt stack with normal buffs (must have wasted a lot of gold there). But I wonder if weapon/armor stuff counted as "abilities". And why some abilities were classified seperately into career mechanics.

Anyone remember what year the patch came out that changed this? Would help me find it.
For the most part, that post from Aza was rubbish. You've found Dalen's ability view thing and on the left you can change the data set from RoR to 1.4.8. You'll see most (all?) of those abilities were non-stacking too. On RoR, the potion + morale + tactic + ability thing was never strongly adhered to at the best of times under its original attempt at an ability system and over time more and more tactics became non-stacking on the basis that they modified abilities so were treated the same as abilities. A few years back WAR's ability system was finally reverse engineered so the 1.4.8 stuff (and earlier) and the WAR ability system as a whole was fully worked out.

On RoR, stacking is now generally:

1) Potions, plus
2) Sum of all flat stat tactics (Wild Gambit, Brute Force, Discipline, etc), plus
3) All stat buffs bought with renown, plus
4) All flat stats from gear (including talismans and set bonus flat stats but NOT set bonus stat procs), plus
5) Strongest from abilities, both passive and active. This includes normal abilities, weapon procs (passive ability), armour set procs (passive ability), morale abilities, tactic procs (passive abilities), abilities modified by tactics (they're still abilities), etc.

I don't think I've missed anything...

Group 5 has almost zero exceptions. Off the top of my head, some damage reduction stuff won't stack with guard, and the abilities that swap stats on gear (i.e. Harbinger of Doom) stack to mimic the stats changing on the gear itself. Likely a few other random ones as well.

As for the Zealot/RP armour buff: on ROR it never stacked with potions. I saw Aza's post back in 2015, and noticed Warping the Spirit did not stack with armour pots so I reported it as a bug. It got made stacking on the test server and then reverted before going live for balance reasons. Aza's own words: "While I'd normally prefer consistency, the last thing this game needs is ADDITIONAL armor stacking."
