Complete newbie here tempted to give this game a go.
I'm not normally a PvP person but as I understand it is the central focus of this game. I see a lot of people saying that they were initially very put off by PvP in most MMOs, but love it in Warhammer Online.
What would you say it is about the PvP here that makes it a cut above the rest?
Here is my list of key features that makes AoR/RoR PvP amazing (common view is that only DAOC is better):
- as was already mentioned collision (bodyblocks) and game mechanics for tanks, one of the most unique things in PvP MMO's;
- variety of group compositions with unique classes none of which are fully mirrored and dependancy on within group synergy of builds;
- variety of game environments and possible actions in it (solo roam orvr, small scale orvr, pug&organised warband scale orvr, pug&organised scenarios, pug&group 6v6);
- combat mechanics and required levels of awarness (to secure kills in organised environment you have to coordinate efforts with team mates and in comparison to e.g. ESO those efforts are fully player controlled, GCD management, not some "buff up for proc, and then release havoc aka burst"), intensity of combat in most skill demanding mode (6v6), short timing for killing window&short timing for recovery;
- complex GCD management with alot of skills (modern MMO's tend to simplify it with not more then 5-10 buttons total) and no universal "rotations", all skills are situational and demand you to take decisions according to whats happening on a screen (no afk spam "1" with setup macroses);
- big maps and huge battles of ~200 vs. ~200 in oRvR (there are other PvP MMO's like this, ESO, GW2, ToL (lineage) etc but beside GW2 (pop issue) and ESO (dunno if they fix lags in cyro even, havent played for alot of time already, but inb4 was totally unplayable) nothing comes close imo);
- PvP straight away from level 1 and no "season", "battle pass" and other constant artificial gear gaps to keep retention, you have to grind gear once and then you are for a very long time up-to-date, no need to regrind anything each "quarter" aka WoW.
