Just make sure your first character is cultivator and apothecary, craft healing pots and once you have a stack of blue for your self sell the rest. If you play alot you will make a minimum of 100 gold a week on this alone as the market for healing pots strangely seem to never end.
The reason I ask is that inflation (and the wealth gap between fresh 40s and people who've been playing for years) would affect the functioning of the auction house? Or does it not get used much escept for pots & talismans for those who choose not to be self-sufficient?

Umm not to be rude or anything but after a year long break. I really dont see inflation on the ah at all. Actually opposite. For instance armor pots that i use for my cashflow one stack of greens used to run about 40 gold now they run about 25-30 a stack depending time of week.

If you are refering to talismans, those used to be pretty pricey but now w chapter 22 runs those prices have gone down. Only ones i see that are up there are armor talis. But armor talis have always been up in price.

So really, i cant really see where inflation is when most prices have gone down.

Ye, i think the only talis to have gone up were STR and WS but not by too much gold

Exactly. A new player will be able to cover the neccessary items with just crafting and selling hp pots. Also you don’t need the best talismans, buy a +22 and you wont even notice the difference. In fast replacable gear go for +19s. Gold only becomes a problem if you constantly use the most expensive liniment or want say a Gunbad diamond (most expensive boe item, roughly 1500-2000 gold). But most players dont do that.

AH listing fee (scales with city stars)
I didn't know this. So I assume AH Listing few decreases if city is higher star?
No reason to leave Green Peaks now.

dwarf/GS city follow altdorf/IC rank for AH fee.
it was always 5star and ppl used that advantage.
then patched few weeks ago.

I'm sure there's guilds / players out there that could buy up the entirety of the AH and resell for a higher price, but considering the player-base is PvP focused, the relative ease of crafting (meaning quick AH restocking) and the greatly diminishing value of gold after getting 500-2000 on a character, it's simply not worth the effort.

Personally speaking and I know it's the case for others as well, once you have stacked up on everything you need, there's no point in getting more than you use, you are "freed" from the gold generating tasks, I think this is the main thing keeping the prices stable.
So new players aren't really competing with veterans more than they are with everybody else.

The developers are missing out and ignoring the mother of all gold sinks.

Repairable weapons and armor. The game had them originally, but players on live found the expense was too much and both factions were united in this one. :) Also, many players would forget to repair their armor after a couple of fights, and would go into another one, and their armor piece would go poof!

And now you know why almost every war camp on Order has a blacksmith. (I do not know what the equivalent was for destro because back then I was a young and foolish newb and only played one realm.)

inflation
In RoR you'll get gold from RvR. Do a few hours a week gathering/crafting of your chosen profession and youll be swimming in gold with nothing to spend it on. It's so simple and works quite well. One of the few underrated boons for new players here. The other barrier, RR, applies to everyone the same way. You either grind or you don't.

I don't remember there being item degradation on live at all. The only broken/repairable weapons I remember were generic loot drops which could then be repaired at an NPC to get an item for your class...
