Well, to me it mattered a lot, to the point of being one of the main reasons why I stuck to my melee SW for so long in T1 (when you could stay for ever in lvl 15). It was pure fun to be able to solo any squig herder and finish them off with only 25% of my health lost when every other SW had trouble with the OP herders of T1. Armor talismans (double value in assault stance) allowed me to reach slightly more armor than most tanks, and I was running around spanking WE's asses and laughing at choppas at melee range.
I know crafting isn't one of the most important issues in the game, but any single thing that allows players to customize and fine tune their toons is an essential part of the fun. Right now it's difficult to gear your toon in a specific direction. Simply some players are better geared than others, but the only way to stress your offensive or defensive orientation, for example, is in the jewelry and in the choice of belt of Vengeance (armor+wounds) over gale-runner's or bloody belt if you wanna go defensive. With armor and potions you could go much further in teh direction you wanted to steer your toon. Maybe the question about when cafting will be enabled is premature and kind of pointless, but I am happy that somebody asks for it, and it shouldnt be relegated to oblivion.
