The "snake-ish things" are called fronds.

I haven't personally hunted these down to verify, but as I understand it thorn pots come from the TOK "Forest Spirits"; which includes spites, dryad's, and treekin's.

After a few tries in swamp-looking areas on BC map I found the Defiled Anvil PQ north east of chapter 22. Perfect spot with groups of 3 lvl 40 Vines each, as Volgo said. And Mystri just reminded me of another name for these creatures. Iirc they are called slavering fronds in the first PQ upon entering High Pass via pve.

Btw, if anyone is interested in the max values if these pots for r38, blue ones reflect 45 damage per melee hit, heavily mitigated by tanks and tough foes.
