Correct, Parry first. You need to be able to parry most of your guard damage.

Just wondering, does the AOE stagger count towards preventing any further knockdown for 20-30 secs?

Yes. Stagger, silence, disarm and kd are on the same immunity.

At this stage of the game there is no real viable build / set, you can try some things but in the end you will not have a decent damage / penetration.
