If I, as a marauder, equip only one weapon I take on the animations of a warrior priest. If knights simply had given to them the ability to wield a spear, and a couple two handed swords were simply given spear appearances-hell, even some kind of proc relevant to a spear, such as 5 foot increased melee range for three seconds, with a trade-off such as reduced auto attack speed or reduced parry...

Boom. A unique build, cool appearance, no client control necessary.

Ah yes, I shall leave it to a player to have me dictate the ins-and-outs of the weapon appearance system and its simple details such as ability animations!

Hereby I present thee with the revolutionary Empire Spear

As you can see, it's considered a one-hand weapon. Auto attack animation is a shield bash and spear prod. Any ability used will not display an attack animation, only the ability effect. If you're going to suggest something in spite of what I tell you is possible or not at the moment, please make sure you know what you're talking about.

 , Ryan, you made my day!

As for roleplay, i personally think there is so much background information out there, be it (the old, because there is no new!) fantasy battle books, the warhammer roleplay or just the novels in the wh universe, that roleplaying the human empire in ror is not difficult at all. Just take a little time for research and you can find endless ideas.

Edit: Oh man, you edited, so i will too...but you made my day anyway :D

"Empire NPCs are either common farmfolk, conscripted civilians or military trained elites. The classes are unique to distinguish players from the rest of the rabble"

As a roleplayer, this is important to remember. What we see in-game and what they represent in lore are two different things. It's easy to wonder why the 55 level champion that can one shot anything is relegated to guard duty, but as far as lore goes, they're really not that strong. We're the badass heroes strutting around that make them all oohh and ahhh technically speaking.

From a realism perspective warcamps should be raidable, yet by Mythic's game design this was deemed impossible. Thus you get marksmen fusiliers, elite halberdiers and terrifying war wizards to keep enemy players out of your safe space. I could always reskin the fusiliers and strikers to look more buff, but it seems like a non-issue even from a lore perspective. That's simply how the game works.

If we look at Warcraft as an example, all cities/towns/camps are "raidable" though it takes a coordinated effort by a semi-large group in most cases (which is fine otherwise it would be a nightmare of constant harrasment). I'd love to see the option in RoR at some point with not quite so terrifying guards, but like you said most people are fine with it as is and I'm not one to rock the boat

First of all thank you for displaying what you can see and I cannot.

Second of all how dare you give such a proud northern barbarian name to an anorexic empire scumbag and then have him mercilessly prod a proud marauder for your entertainment. Shameful display.

That aside, is it possible to grant the "can wield spear" ( 2 handed) to the class, and simply have a knight-only spear with identical stats to the Knights scenario 2h weapon?

Not trying to be facetious or rude at all, genuinely think it would work, and wouldn't confuse anyone on destro as to which class they're fighting as no one else in order would have a two handed spear and chicken feathers on their brain bucket.

If I classify it as an actual spear and made Knights able to wield spears, nothing would change. Only difference would be that all your sword abilities (1 handed and 2 handed) abilities would not be usable. What I'm demonstrating here is that we require client control to 1. make the spear display the correct combat animations and 2. change it from a 1-handed Empire variant to a 2-handed Elf variant, as per your suggestion. All in all, client control is required to rework the majority of NPC weapons and armor to be usable by players, and this sort of thing needs to happen in a concise manner; I'm not going to hand out unique appearance to just the Empire when there's a plethora of items for all the other races as well.
