This is what I do.

When pugging.
I enter a SC.
I notice if there is another chosen in my the group and notice his aura's. I don't expect him to switch aura's because its a pug. You can tell what he is spec'd into by how much of a buff he is giving his group.
I look at the opposing dps classes and notice how many of a class type it is. I take note of their main damage types.
(Either their main damage type is physical or magical.)
I notice who i'm probably going to be guarding predominately.
I adjust my aura's accordingly to match my opposition and to benefit my group depending on pug group composition.

I'll even do a quick tactic slot switch to match against what my opposition brings.

You have 20 or 30 sec's to adjust.

After 2 minutes I'll relook at the SC scoreboard and see if my guesses were correct. Example: Is the AM healing or dps? I'll adjust mid fight if i grossly misjudged.

I do the same in a premade setting.
Me and the other chosen go through the same process but as a team. We'll even switch aura's mid fight if its required or part of a strategy.
