Why do people continue to start with any attack other then thunderous blows it boggles the mind.

Actually, only if you can proc monstro before you detaunt. Don't try to proc it after detaunting, unless you do that by throwing an axe at something that won't hurt you anyways. Monstro without the proc is useless.

hold up, you need to proc mnstro in order to get the anti armor pen dealie? i thought you only proc monstro for the garbage HoT

Yeah. In that case if you don't have a guard you would be better off just detaunting. If you do, switch to monstrosity and spam your aoe button.
