Giving BO/SM a good ST punt is a bad solution since it would make them similar to the other tanks. A defensive pounce makes them unique, just like all classes in WAR should be.
Not saying BO/SMs shouldn't be improved just saying defensive jump is a badly designed ability. It is bad since it lets you zerg down kiters more easy. Secondly it will make it more difficult to funnel or tank wall. The last two in my opinion are one of the key things that made WAR cool.
Any skill would be "badly designed" if you look at it from the zerg.
"Badly designed" skills that let you zerg down kiters more easily:
- Covenant of Celerity
- Eye shot
- Rift/Magnet
- Terrible Embrace/Fetch
- Mistress of the Marsh/Sticky Feetz
- Stop Runnin/Take Down
- Pounce
- On your Knees
- etc.
Defensive pounce is nothing compared to those skills. It requires a friendly target, so if you don't have someone from your group standing right next to the kiter, it won't help to "zerg" the kiters.
Now, let's analyze Defensive Pounce from the kiters PoV: The tank stays while his group starts kiting. He roots a couple enemies but a bunch pass him. The tank uses his Defensive Pounce to get to a kiter in his group, and uses his AoE KB on whoever passed him in the first place. His group continues to kite and the tank gets healed in the meantime. The rest of the zerg catches up with the tank and he AoE snares them (BOs can, sorry SMs!) giving more room and time to his kiter friends. The tank gets focused and just when he is about to die, he pounces again to his kiter friends.
Defensive Pounce would be AWESOME for protecting backlines and kiters. It would be "meh" for offensive purposes, and only on order and if you are grouped with a WL.
