Items not equipping to chacter until after logout

Any new equipment item I try to equip from my bag does not show up on my character page. The item remains in my bag but I am unable to do anything with it. After logging out and back in the items is now equipped on my character. Is this due to some sort of server lag or is there something else causing it?
